"...understand firearms saftey." The correct phrase is "...understand firearms saftey." This is a vital duty for any responsible parent.

Give me a little bit of credit here, will ya?

Good fortune,

Well I think it depends on how old they are. When they get to a certain age where you feel they are responsible enough then of course teach them safety. Ive just heard of so many cases where someones kid gets into the gun closet and something horrible happens by accident.

When I was stuck living in a group home with a schizophrenic guy, I did. I'm pretty safe where I live now, though, and I seemed to have misplaced the weapon (not a lethal weapon, just a deterrant). Going places (within reason) doesn't worry me because I can outrun most people.

Although their effects are temporary, mace and pepper spray are illegal in many states, aren't they? Well, tell me if I'm wrong, but there's no law against carrying around those cans of bug spray designed to snipe nests from a long distance, are there? Ironic, since that could permanently blind someone from a much greater distance.

I'd never carry that around though, since it might explode if I left it in my car in the summer (if Mythbusters has said otherwise, please correct me here as well).

My point is that outside of knives and guns, whether something is or isn't a weapon depends entirely on whether its owner says it is. So I'm curious as to just what Icarus's arsenal consists of.

I carry a concealed pistol sometimes and I always carry a pocket knife. The knife comes in handy for a lot of things other than as a weapon. The pistol........ well......... you don't need one until you really REALLY need one then you need it imediately. Like a seatbelt and airbag in a car.

Maybe those of you who say you need weapons can tell the rest of us where live.

In my area, you don't really need weapons... I guess unless you're a woman. Then mace might be a good idea.

I live in a quiet part of the UK, where people do not expect violent crime. Here its illegal to own firearms without a licence, let alone wear them. Farmers gave shotguns, licensed, but would only need to shoot dogs that worry their sheep, or to shoot deer with. Its even illegal to carry knives with blades longer than 3 inches!

The best weapon is self-confidence, the ability to stay out of trouble, and some skill in the martial arts if ever you need to defend yourself.

Thank goodness for that

I dont carry weapons, although I have a freind who used keep knives. It used to annoy me so much, he couldnt see that he was pepetuating the only reason to carry one: that other fools might also be carrying one.

When Im out with my dog late at night, 1 or 2 am I have my dogs heavy chain leash which would hurt if you whacked somebody with it. Ive only once had a dodgy moment in all my late night walks when somebody ran up behind me but stopped suddenly when I turned around. The guy then started to talk about how dangerous my town had become...I dont think he was quite right...

would you believe my fists are registered with the FBI as deadly weapons

btw, when I was walking my labrador (which was on a leash right in front of my 3 y.o. boy) a few years ago, my dog was attacked by another dog. After kicking it several times, the owner came and put a leash on it and restrained it. Ever since then I like to carry a hockey stick or pocket knife (4" locking blade in a sheath) when walking my dog in a public park. In an unprovoked attack, I would have no hesitation in sticking a dog or laying into it with a hockey stick.

The hockey stick is also usefull for hitting a tennis ball for the dog to fetch.

I have never felt a need to carry a weapon for my own safety, but if we had concealed carry laws, I would carry a 45, just because I could :)

There are (or were before 9-11?) on-line stores that sold "CIA Letter Openers", which is a plastic knife that can be sharpened and will hold an edge, and can be hidden inside a neck tie. Does not get detected by metal detectors.

You can also get a belt buckle with a blade that slips inside the leather belt and when scanned by metal detectors, operators think its just a belt buckle. A relative that lived in Jo-burg had one (just for fun) and flew several times into the UK wearing it (pre9-11) and was never stopped.

Knowing this, it seems silly that airlines will take toe nail clippers off you as a security risk.
