When I was at Special Effects MAke Up School there were a lot of body modifiers there. I said I was there to learn how to do special effects, not become one.
I often think about the courage to believe strongly enough in some of these things to commit to them for life. Although I see a lot of people doing it for fashions sake.
Is this any different than hair implants? One could argue that it is, and that it isnt.A hair guy is trying to blend in rather than stand out. But its still non acceptance of yourself naturally.

When people tellme I look like so and so I think "oh hes a generic looking white guy too?"

My identity is through my art and actions and words.

All for personal freedom. If someone feels the need to do extensive obvious (horns , breasts,) or not so ( hair plugs, tummy tuck) I think thats fine. But not for me and I reserve the right to have a personal non absolutisim opnion.
If you were considering being transplanted into a Yuppie I got a gripe.
I used to want to have my tounge removed because it got me into so much trouble. But I realize now AS doesnt stop with just your speech. :o

Wow! I'm glad you waited on that one!

Your comment about some of the folks at school being into body mod is interesting... currently the one body mod I have done was to get both ears pierced... I'm slowly upping the size but I want to keep the holes small... like a 10 gauge max or perhaps an 8ga.

I haven't seen much in the way of bod mods like you would see with MODCON, but I do see a fair number of scarifications, cutting, and a variety of tat's... homemade, prison, and professional.

My mother-in-law had an eyelid lift because her lids were drooping down into her field of vision.

Although most mention female plastic surgeries... men do their share.

One of those that I wish were not pushed so much would be breast reductions for men who have gynecomastia.
In cases where it is not a physical health issue, I wish our societies were healthy enough emotionally to accept a man with enlarged breasts.
Other than aesthetics in many cases I have read about, there is no reason to go under the knife.

Society wants woman to get bigger breasts... and men to get smaller breasts. A little to weird for me.
It seem so much easier to accept people as they are.

what this thread is about...I like to call "barbie syndrome".

A strive for perfectionism that can only be achieved by expensive and unnatural body modification. It is quite sad really that some people think "this" is the way that they "have" to look. It's all of the media that destroys peoples self esteem and brings them to the conclusion that they just "aren't good enough". What do they think next..."If I get bigger boobs...maybe society will like me more". There, the first cosmetic surgery is done.

What about next? They WILL see that something else is "not up to standard" and want to "fix" that, too. There for, the addiction starts.

Why can't people just be natural and like their bodies? I really don't understand why the media has to do this to people!

For some people it's not a 'barbie syndrome' sort of thing.
But I agree with you that if that's the reason, then they should take more time to understand what's driving that impulse... better money spent in that case

I hear in California the fashionable get plastic surgery like white folks love SUVs and LL Bean here in the midwest. Think about how popularity works. I see Hummers all over. So out in LA they probably have the same two or three noses from the same two or three doctors.
I hate to admit but I am prejudiced about the group fashionnmentality.
I met a hippy girl ina new age shop a few weeks ago. She was just , herself. I really found THAT attractive.
This Barbie look has a stigma attatched to it as well. Women are being treated badly or ignored because of the Paris Hilton type b*tchy image.
Isnt all that starting the relationship out on a lie?

As for fashion piercings and tatoos. I never can make up my mind.
Although a brand that reads "copyright 1972" on my butt cheek like the old GI Joes had would be fun.

They don't want to deal with what god has given them. I think that celebrities have more money than brains. Teenage girls and young women are starving themselves to get that size 8 body. So I'm a size 24! That doesn't make me less of a person.

i fully agree... i find all this crap to be mega BS...

i personally like my girls soft and squishy :D better for huggles :D

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

California and LA are not interchangeable. I don't know what goes on in LA, but plastic surgery isn't popular where I'm from in NorCal.

It isn't popular in North Texas either.

Screw cosmetic surgery. Unless you're somehow really disfigured, you shouldn't need it. The media's scrutiny of anything less than their ideal of "perfect" is a bane of sensibility and fairness.

I know northern CA had the most beautiful fir tree forests Ive ever seen.
Honestly on my cross country trip I skipped three cities because of bad rep. Miami,LA, and Vegas.
But you know how it is with east and west coast generalizations.
I say New York here and people think of an overcrowded melting pot. I say Ohio there and people think of cornfields and the Amish.

I say east coast while on the west coast and they think of . . . crazy people.

Good comment. Both the South and the northern Rockies conjure up a scenario that's still in the Dark ages.

right , Norhtern Rockies makes me think of fur trappers, and the south makes me think of banjos, Col Sanders, and Banjos.
What was really strange was when I went to Taiwan to teach right after college. All my friends warned me about Kung Fu gangfights and getting my house broken into by Ninjas.
In fact they well cell phone and dvd obsessed LONG before us. They ate bKentucky Fried chicken and had a ten story mall that was nothing but computers. Everyone loved Japanese and American pop culture.
So I aske some folks what they thought the USA was like. They said Cowboys. And everyone wears six shooters.

I would never do something like this but I can understand why some people would despite the risks and costs.

They are living for the moment and have been brainwashed enough through their lives to think that acceptance by others is very important for their careers and self-image. Some people obsesses over certain physical features too much and it is difficult to just forget about and accept their flaws.

And what of all this thousands of dollars worth of cosmetic dentistry?

Sidenote here: I've had cosmetic denistry because I pulvarized (my dentist's words) my tooth at 19. I will only go to a dentist who can do it because when the tooth wears done and needs to be refixed, I want it to look real. The same thing can go for some cos surgeries too. It is needed for those who were burned, attacked by dogs, etc.
