I had an interest in doors and hardware since middle school were I learned about them but only did small things like make sure screws were tight, by time I reached high school I was adjusting door speed and making sure the closer is secured to door and frame. teachers would ask me what to do for varius problems (such as suddenly stopped closing door and things) so word got around then some would call me the door doctor.
yea, I actaully cared about the security of the building and fixing the doors. the custodians on other hand, they were either drinking coffee, socializing or reading the paper or waited until the doors fell off their hinges before they would even notice theres a problem. the best way to fix doors is to do preventative maintenance. that means like every month or so (depending on how often door was used) and check to make sure screws are tight and check for wear on hinges.
by last 2 years of high school I kinda took over in the door department and had 2 schools to fix, the county's technical school (custodians there were soooo novice it took them 6 hours to figure out how to remove the arm from a door closer<<thats true believe it or not!) and the local school district's high school. when custodians and people realized that I was better at fixing things then the custodians they didnt really care much about what I did as long as what I did makes door pass the nj state uniform building codes for school egress (exit) and ADA doors.
I truely miss the teacher that allowed me to fix them, best teacher I have had in school, (I think he believed in the montissori method (learning by doing) I would visit the schools I have worked on accept one thing, im not a parent or a student anymore (graduated in 2002). this state made it a pain in the butt to even visit so I guess I only have is just the websites from both places and if someone uploads a video to youtube or a pic of the places to flickr.
