I was once stuck at the San Diego airport for 2 days, waiting long hours between flights that I was unsuccessfully trying to get on as standby. I walked around outside, everywhere. There was a beautiful waterfront municipal park nearby that I hung out at a lot. Ultimately, it was boring as hell. I was stuck wearing dressy clothing (don't ask), which made me feel uncomfortable and out of my element. I don't really know what to suggest, other than what's already been. Get books-on-CD from your local public library, convert the tracks to 54kbps mp3 and load them onto your personal audio device.

Last ditch talks on Monday 31st are scheduled:

I'm not optimistic that the strikes will be averted.

Postperson, yes it will be cold, but I live in subtropical Queensland and have never seen snow. The cold weather will be a novelty (though I'm sure it will wear off).

Hey charging for 10-15 min massages sounds great! And also a great way to meet lots of people!

Whereabouts in Portugal are you going to? It must be a very long trip for you from Australia!

As for my suggestions:

Obviously take a digicam and loads of memory and stuff
Books you enjoy reading
I tend to enjoy staring off into space

Oh, and another point - if you like milk, drink that at the airport as it'll be cheaper!

Good news - I contacted the airline I'm flying with and the said if the strike occurs ....

we will leave Kuala Lumpur at scheduled time and land in Amsterdam!! !

The airline will refund any accomodation costs incurred while in Amsterdam and waiting to be delivered to London.

Woohoo!

So I'm happy whether or not the strike goes ahead. (I would prefer it doesn't go ahead and impact on all those travellers ... but for me personally ... I'll be happy either way.

I'm flying into Faro - my friend lives in a village approximately 1 hour from Faro.

It is a very long trip! 10 hours from Brisbane to Kuala Lumpur .... 6 hour stopover ... then 12 hours flight Kuala Lumpur to London (or Amsterdam depending on where we land). An overnight stay, then 3 hour flight to Faro.

I have 3 sons and work part-time. My life is usually hectic and time to myself is a luxury. So all that travel to get there won't be too bad, because I don't have anyone else to look after!

I've been to Faro. It's a very nice town. When I went to Portugal in April I stopped at Tavira which was fine as far as it went but the place was utterly dead.

Hope you have a good trip. Oh, if you like sardine paté, get a load of the Manna brand. Lovely stuff!
