Some popular things are so dreadful, like Soulja Boy, Crazy Frog and Basshunter. What an insult to my poor aspie ears.

When I was in school, I remember kids getting a Nike swoosh shaved into the back of their hair, I thought it was pointless.

most of the time, things become popular because they are hyped up by media and advertisers Basically, if you tell someone it's good frequently enough, they are eventually going to believe you. Once a few people start buying, well, then the fad has hit critical mass...the fad will start selling itself because other people have it, and NT's dont' want to be the "have not's" This can be music, technology gadgets, clothes, whatever! Advertisers have found there is a fortune to be made in playing our sheep mentality!! !

I find it amusing how many people actually tolerate bad products and bad music just because it is considered "popular"

Sometimes I do get confused about such things. How did "Soulja Boy" become the most popular song in the country for a period of time? I think that was some sort of cultural low point for us. That song was only fun to listen to because it was so bad.

Hopefully, you're not old enough to remember the horror thrust upon us that was the Macarena back in the late 90s.

*Still remembers the moves to that dance

i usually pick up on trends five years or so after they were big, and right down the middle i've either reacted "oh i see why this was big" or "please explain to me why this was popular". i won't get into specifics but i'm sure you get the picture.

Don't know why these things are so popular:

Reality TV Shows
Politics
Music
Celebrities
Stuff like "Hannah Montana" and "High School Musical"

What's so interesting about those things?

yes, for example the "gangsta rap" fashion. it's completely unflattering, IMO, but to each their own.
