Canyon wind said "One stereotype of Americans I've often heard from foreigners is that a lot of us go to other countries and expect everybody to speak and understand english."

Recently I observed an American woman in a supermarket here in France at the deli counter, I think she was on holiday but having a hard time communicating. She screamed at the top of her voice most indignantly "Doesn't anyone here speak English". My first thought was "Duh! You're in France - they speak French!" - and no I didn't offer to help as she was so rude.

I think aspies have a tendency to use larger vocabularies because the words are less filled with implications as they are less commonly used. It's easier to communicate that way as people are more likely to take you literally rather than think you're implying something else.

I think you've got something there. Lot's of common words have "woolly" meanings, so we look for more specific words. It probably explains why I also wrap quotes around words all the time as the word may not quite convey exactly what I intend at face value.

I have a limited vocabulary in person, not by choice.

I always tend to speak with complex words, many times my online friends who I talk to on teamspeak have commented that they think I talk like that intentionally just to sound smart :P
