I prefer to have one or two but it depends on where you live. I live in a town so one is really all we can have. When we lived in the country, we usually had 5 at a time.

Over 5, though personally I would never go above two (unless it's an abandoned family of cats, which we've taken in a couple of times)

I think it's great you're considering adopting a cat from the animal shelter. I luv cats no matter what but it's a shame most people gravitate toward pet stores rather than a place where their fate is uncertain.

As for too many cats, I think it depends upon where you live, what the environment is, and if you are willing to spends some extra money and responsibility to each cat. We have a lady that hoards cats which irks me b/c she doesn't get them fixed so they multiply and spread disease to other cats. Ironically many of them have been taken to the Animal Shelter :(

I grew up with at least the number of 7 cats. My whole family are cat lovers plus we had a large labrador dog.

Funny you should say shelter, I was hesitant about getting one at the shelter not too longe ago because it upsets me to know that some of these cats are either going to be put down or taken into abusive homes. I wanted to get a companion for my other cat, Bob who is a socialite.

I don't regret it now that I did adopt Bill at the shelter. They told me he was probably the most likely to be put down because of his age which they said was 5. Most ppl adopt kittens. He looked sickly and full of famine until after some days. It was like looking at a different cat compared to the one I had seen at the shelter. And guess what? Turns out the animal shelter was WRONG, I had two vets approximate his age to 2!!

Here he is plump and happy. I can't believe what circumstances would've happened if I hadn't adopted him. He has so much character and charisma
.

With character...

Not to mention he's got a buddy.

I have one... two is my limit...

My grandmother has 80... inside cats, they don't go out.... in a five bedroom house.... she knows all their names.... she works two jobs to support them... (she is a rescue for cats that no one else will take) one room is devoted to cats that have FIV, and she'll take in pregnant mothercats and keep them in her room (they seem to like her closet)... she has a couple amputees... and a vet that makes a housecall to do shots....

It is really fun to turn on the electric can opener in that house.... about 30 free roam cats come running....

Cat number ten, C.C., joined our family last Christmas. If a person can take care of multiple pets well, then the only limits are those of the human heart. Barring incidents of pet hoarding, people can take care of multiple animals well. I have a dog and ten cats. Our family has been a multiple pet family for more than 30 years.

A friend of my mother has a farm, and she's got about 20. It's the coolest thing, everywhere you go on the farm, there are cats everywhere. Most of them sleep in the barn, so space and litterboxs aren't an issue, though I'd imagine food gets expensive. If I ever had a space like that, I'd want a lot of cats. For the moment though, two is plenty for me.

I love all animals.

I feel there is something you can learn from all of them.

Cats are cool. I do like to hear them purr, BUT...

I am very allergic to them -very.

However, if I had a farm, then I wouldn't mind a few outdoor cats to help with mice.

You know I grew up with cats for a long time sneezing and having problems. Later I was checked and it turned out I was allergic to them. :( That didn't stop me from begging my dad to keep them so we did.

As miserable as I was it didn't take me that long till around the age of 14 to no longer have allergy issues with cats. I've often wondered if one can build an immunity to certain allergens. :?

I think I built one to mine. I was allergic to cats as well but once we kept ours in the house long enough, it no longer bothered me. :)

I don't know about other allergies though, maybe, maybe not.

What's funny is that you can build up an immunity to your own cats, and then when you visit someone else, you can start getting huge allergic reactions to theirs! Also, I've noticed that when I feed my cats fish, I start reacting like crazy! 8O
