When saying friendly people, IMO this depends heavily on the location within the UK in my opinion. Even between Irish cities I noticed a lot of difference, in Northern Ireland people seemed a lot more disciplined and slightly more traditional than in some big cities south of the border. I also found the Scottish somewhere easier going than most English people I met when travelling "mainland UK" (that is the term Northern Irish people use for the rest of the UK)

East Anglia where I live (hi veruniel!) is OK, I suppose, but I've lived in small towns all my life and I always feel slightly uneasy about not fitting in. I think the flipside of the conventionality of the small town is the way in which people get mind-bogglingly drunk on weekends - it's the only way they know how to relax. Which is depressing. I think cities are much more accommodating of eccentricity, but it depends on the city; London is so huge it's soulless, or I found that when I worked there. Norwich is a cool place, a lot more creative and tolerant, I think, than the smaller places round here.

Britain as a whole...ugh. The cost of living is sky-high right now, our government are idiots (but hey, in what country is that not true?!), and there are CCTV cameras all over the place.

I want to move to Seattle. The weather's not entirely dissimilar, and you can get Marmite and PG Tips tea at the Crumpet Shop in Pike Place Market, so what's not to like? (Oh yeah, the cost of living, but I figure if I'm going to be an impoverished artist anyway, I might as well do it somewhere with proper mountains. )

You complain about idiotic governments and then next line you want to move to the US?

I actually have seen a petition on the web once, started by a British guy, asking for the UK to become the 51st state of the USA  Petition had only a few tens of signatures after several months so obviously his idea was not exactly popular.

Speaking of the United Kingdom, what about the knife crime that keeps popping up on the news these days?

I'm glad to have left England. However you can't really say England is good or bad it depends hugely on where you live. Sometimes only a few miles can make a huge difference. In general though England is becoming more and more a nation of everyone looking out for themselves and no time or patience with others. The roads are grid locked with impatient drivers. It is too crowded. There is also a general atmosphere of misery and runaway crime as reflected on the media there too. These are just generalisations though from my perspective. I'm sure plenty of people would say the opposite.

Technically speaking, it's easier to dodge a knife than a bullet. :nerdy:

IMO losing of social feeling and tolerance is typical for the entire European Union. In Belgium I experienced pretty much the same. Since I lived in Turkey and experienced how great society was there, I have a more bleak view of European culture and society. I lived in 4 EU countries now and travelled through many more ; none could compare to Turkey when it comes to the social feeling and helpfullness of people.

Drinking is fun only in as far as the people you're with. It's interesting, and can improve a good night out, but enjoying alcohol is entirely dependant on having good company in the first place in my experience.

For the crime levels and financial safety the social system gives it is a good country, but several things I don't really like are the constant strive for over the top political correctness that keeps happening, and the lack of inspiring environments... If i see one more concrete tower block I'll scream :P

The UK, in my opinion, is an utter cr*phole

Although I've lived here all my life I absolutely hate it, if I could get out I would get out
