If the person can't read, then it might as well be written in Romulan.

Not quite. Because now no illiterate people can sue the manufacturer claiming they were injured as a direct result of not being able to read the warnings :D

It didn't say what product that was on, but there was a sad case a while back where a child died because her mother was illiterate that might be the reason for this warning. The doctor prescribed some medicine that the child was supposed to take 2 drops before seeing the doctor the next day (surgery). Well the mother never told the doctor or pharmacist that she couldn't read so she took the instructors to give her daughter the medicine before surgery literally - and gave the child the whole bottle. Then she sued the doctor for not knowing she was illiterate and giving her precise verbal instructions to account for illiteracy

There was a lady in town who sued the city after she fell and broke her ankle. She had decided to short cut across an empty city lot. It was winter, and the path (which was made by other short cutters, not by any official city agency ) was icy, uneven, and treacherous - in fact, it looked icy, uneven and treacherous. She proceeded anyway, slipped and fell, breaking her ankle. She was suing because she felt the city should have put up a sign stating the danger of walking along the path, and felt that the city was liable because they hadn't been maintaining the path. Now, surrounding said lot was a very dry and clear sidewalk for her to walk on, and there was no reason for her to short cut across the lot, except for sheer laziness. Obviously, the judge laughed her right out of court on that one.

Some people just see dollar signs, and that coupled with a sense of self-entitlement and fierce aversion to taking any responsibility at all for one's personal safety, generates these silly warnings.

On signs - my favorite in town is actually a legitimate sign - "No bikes or skateboards allowed" - however, right underneath the sign, there is a bike stand.

Most packages of frozen food say "remove plastic wrap before cooking". One of my coworkers confessed that his mother had banned him from the kitchen because he cooked some meat without removing the plastic!

My paper shredder has a picture of a necktie in a circle with a slash through it.

That's not all that odd when you consider how many packages of frozen food today are designed to be cooked/microwaved prior to opening the packages

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. I was referring to something that had to be put in an oven, not a microwave.

The sad part is that the reasons those warnings are on there is that somebody tried to do that once

I wonder what would happen if you try it?

A few years ago I went to a health and beauty store, and there was this skin care line called Totally Juicy. They have cleansers, masks, moisturizers, etc. On all the bottles there was a warning that said "these products are for on your face, not in your face, please don't eat Totally Juicy products."

Funny thing is, I could actually see someone trying that.

Going by the google results i just saw, I can see many children thinking totally juicy products are food items. Not only do they have a name that sounds like food "totally juicy" but are billed under names like grapefruit, apple, and sugar

Hence the warning. Although, would the kid really be able to read it at their age, anyway? :P

You never know. I could read at age 3.

On the pack of fish food (dried daphnia or special flakes, I don't remember now): "Eat before the end of the year". Well, maybe it doesn't seem such a dumb warning but on the other hand it isn't me who is supposed to eat this but my fish. "Let your fish eat this before the end of the year" would sound better :P
