This guy pissed me off
I find it fascinating you think someone must be either overweight, or with an eating disorder, to see the importance of the prevailing body prejudice that is prevalent today.
You asked me if I was eating disordered or overweight, before saying I was too sensitive. This implies you believe that for people to be concerned with size prejudice, it has to affect them personally.
I'm sorry you are unable to have the compassion to understand how damaging, messages that regard health based on body size alone is to all people. I'm going to leave this post, I can't teach you to have compassion. I have tried to help you understand the damage messages that correlate health with weight do to kids, I explained to you that children are starving themselves to be thin. Apperantly you are not moved by the tragedy that a child should be so burdened by adult issues when they should be having a childhood, that they instead learn life long maladaptive and unhealthy behaviors surrounding food.
I'm simply trying to educate, and help others who are fat. Nobody should have to endure the constant prejudice that is made towards fat people every single day. That if you're not thin, you are a failure. If you are fat, it must be your own fault. Perhaps you should try to imagine growing up hearing from the moment you are able to understand language, that food is not to be enjoyed, it is something that should be measured and treated as if it's something that could kill you. Imagine how a child, hearing such things from their parents, is supposed to grow up without having eating disordered behavior.
You say I'm too sensitive, that's fine. I feel sorry that you are unable to live a life where you help others, rather than fight those who are doing their best to fight messages which harm and demean others.
you need to educate yourself before you try and educate others...this is from the mayo clinic. i'm sorry you have issues with your own body image and feel the need to push it off onto others..
Causes
Although there are some genetic and hormonal causes of childhood obesity, most excess weight is caused by kids eating too much and exercising too little. Children, unlike adults, need extra nutrients and calories to fuel their growth and development. So if they consume the calories needed for daily activities, growth and metabolism, they add pounds in proportion to their growth. But children who eat more calories than needed gain weight beyond what's required to support their growing bodies.
Far less common than lifestyle issues are genetic diseases and hormonal disorders that can predispose a child to obesity. These diseases, such as Prader-Willi syndrome and Cushing's syndrome, affect a very small proportion of children. In the general population, eating and exercise habits play a much larger role.
1) This isn't a competition of compassion; what purpose does that serve?
2) Fat, both in excess and in absence, can be a health factor.
3) It is not the only factor, and some can become fixated with it to the exclusion of other contributing aspects.
4) We will always be evaluated and judged as we are perceived by others - this is part of sensory experience - but that does not condone prejudice.
5) There are vast subjective differences in what people consider healthy in modern society.
While I've never been thin, I have been healthy in my life. Right now, I'm working on getting back there. Part of that process for me was shedding weight, but that is by no means the whole of it.

VERY well put..

Thanks, Kattoo. Took a moment to reply in the facebook thread; I'm assuming there is an approval process as it did not show immediately.

What I am saying is for all people, including children, you do not know that person's health simply by looking whether to see they are fat or thin. We wouldn't need doctors, if one could simply tell by looking at someone, their entire health history. Do you know if the people who are genetically predisposed to being fatter, were fat children? Perhaps you should ask them, if they were fat as children, it may give you insight that even with kids health isn't simple as looking at body size.
nooo...i said kid's can be fat due to genetics or they can be fat due to eating crap. do not tell me what i "feel." while some people are genetically predisposed to being over weight, there ARE also kids who are overweight due to bad eating habits. that was my point. please don't try and pick my brain...you are taking everything i have said out of context, and not understanding my point in saying what i said in the first place. the guy was basically saying to feed kids whatever they want. my reply was there are so many obese kids out there already because parent's do just that. i did not mention the children predisposed to obesity, because that was not the topic...
I think that something people are missing is the fact that being obese is unhealthy. Yes, there are people who are genetically predisposed to having issues in their digestive systems that allows them to gain weight easily, but their genetic predisposition doesn't make their obesity any more healthy than the obesity of people who gain weight due to bad eating habits.
It's not okay to feed kids anything they want. It's not okay to feed kinds the typical American diet, even. The average American family (based on statistics released this week) spends 40 percent of their food budget at fast food restaurants. Fast food is essentially the average American diet. The food that some Americans cook at home -- a fat-heavy array of Cheez-Whiz, Ketchup and Mayonnaise based sauces accompanying meat and potatoes -- is little better than home-cooked junk food.
Obesity is an epidemic among young people now. As a food-culture disease, obesity has spread to our children, and it is also worsening as more and more people are becoming obese AND the people who are obese are continuing to grow their size. Due to the increasing obesity trends, childhood diabetes is a growing problem now, as well as childhood cardiovascular disease.

what he said was very rude and you should have him reported for his sarcastic abuse.
Seriously?
Report someone for being sarcasstic? (Iread the responses- he wasn't abusive in the least. Critical, but not abusive.)
There wouldnt' be anyone left on the web if that were the case.

HECK, I eat FAR less than I used to, and GAIN weight! My mother eats more than I do, and she is SMALL! So HOW much do I eat? I happen to be on a STRICT diet now, and I can tell you!
120Gms Protein
23Gms Fat(11Gms saturated, 0 trans, 12Gms unsaturated)
44Gms Carbs
863 calories FOR THE DAY
It seems if I go much(Perhaps 400calories total of which about 80 are fat calories) over that, I GAIN weight! INCREDIBLE!
Admittedly, that IS a fair amount of fat, and I am trying to reduce it to about 12Gms. As for the carbs, the idea was to cause a calorie deficit so I would lose weight.
So HOW does that relate to when I was a kid? Well, here was a TYPICAL lunch(NOT counting coke or desert!)!
116Gms Protein
76Gms Fat
160Gms carbs
1788 FOR JUST LUNCH!
BTW I didn't really gain weight! Of course, I WAS like 6 or 7, but I wasn't in sports, etc....
So weight is DEFINITELY dependent on things other than calories in, fat in, etc...
Same here. In fact, I just had my 40-year physical today. Technically, at my ht (5-9), wt (197) I am considered "border-line obese".
Whatever.
A year ago, I was 6'4" and 325 pounds; now I'm 252. My personal goal is to convert roughly another 30 pounds from fat - whether that is to muscle or weight lost, I am flexible, and I don't have a number that I am 'supposed' to weigh. But I'm feeling better, which was my goal.

I know...I already said that. But here is that post from Mayo Clinic in case you missed it..

Metabolic differences, food allergies, age, level of physical activity, amount of muscle, water consumption, cardiac health, absorption issues, parasites, diabetes... there are a lot of things that affect weight and caloric use. You can't compare yourself to others absolutely, because of these differences - your approach has to be tailored for you.

Might be metabolic then. You are't burning calories as quickly as you would like.
If you build some muscles up more, your resting metabolism will go up. Basically, even not exercising, bigger muscles burn a lot of energy.
