I'm having problems too. I picked up a virus/worm recently, and now I can only use my computer in "safe mode". It sucks because I can't get the sound to work, so no music, or Youtubes. I guess it's time to visit the "computer guy".

hjave you been able to get virus scan working in safe mode?

^I don't have a "paid" virus protection program yet, and haven't found any free ones that'll touch my virus/worm. It seems to be really strong, and hard to get rid of.

^I tried a re-install but for some reason, it didn't work. It didn't even erase any of the stuff I have. When I started it back up, everything was the same as before. Keep in mind that I'm not very good with computers, but my Dell seems to be more complicated than others. On my buddies computer, it is very simple to do a system recovery, and return it to it's "as new" state. I think I'm going to have to take it in for repair. I wish I had a "Best Buy" nearby, but I don't even know where the closest on is.

Ok heres what i want you to do..

do you have a RETAIL WINDOWS CD?

if yes continue, if no STOP and go to a store and buy one.

Now..

click start then run then type cmd then type in fdisk C://

im rusty on windows systems, that SHOULD format your hard drive. the computer will no longer boot. then boot to the install CD.

^Thanks for the advice. I need to get that CD, the only one I have is the one that came with my computer, and it is supposed to install WindowsXP. I ran it three times(2 different ways) with no success. I even setup my computer to boot from CD and that didn't work, so I gave up for now. I guess I'll have to live with "safe mode" for a little while.

most in the box CDs do not work when there is a master boot record virus. which you may have. or another serious record. your best off buying a true retail CD

Cool, I think I might give that a try before I take it to the shop. Thanks.

sometimes you can get a retail disk for under 100 dollars taking it in costs more than that so yes you are better off trying a retail CD
