Well, I've been gainfully employed for the last twenty years, have claimed welfare for a total of three months in my entire life when I was really desperate, have never smoked, and despise reality TV. I had to leave college because my folks were pestering me to get a job. I drink good beer on occasion and cuss when it seems called for.
And I have two tattoos, both of which have personal significance to me, neither of which I regret, and both of which I had done after the age of 35. My employers don't have a dress code, and as for being a tattooed wrinkly...doesn't everyone get old, inked or not?
Seriously, it is about commitment. Whether it's something you're committed to now and always (like your spirituality or a principle you live by), or something you experienced for a while that will always be part of what made you who you are (like the band that first turned you on to music), you have to accept that it will be permanent, so it'd sure as heck better mean something. Removal is possible, of course, but that would be like getting married on the assumption that divorce is always an option - i.e. a bit pointless. And getting a tattoo because having one is 'cool', i.e. fashionable, is a contradiction in terms if you think about it. It's the people who've done that who do regret it later.
Ideally, first find a tattooist who is a) qualified (with hygiene certificates etc.), b) does art in a style you love, and c) you feel personally comfortable with him/her...discuss what you want and see what they can come up with. Having something personally designed is more likely to get you something you can happily live with than just picking from the flash.
