The food was...pretty much as it is in Australia. The weather I will be bitching about in a later installment. I'm only about a sixth of the way through. Be patient.

I don't usually enjoy reading about people's travels, but your writing is extremely entertaining. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Thank you, thank you very much [/presley].

Or Doctor Who for that matter...

I'll bet you at least visited some locations.

He has already mentioned Dr Who stuff a few times, I expect there'll be more though.

QM: Do you find Europeans strangely pale? That's the thing that always strikes me. How pale they are.

Not the african-europeans (I was surprised by how many there were in Paris - and how well everyone seemed to get along there - unlike the UK where there seemed to be a littlle bit of a "gap")

But yeah... the Europeans are very white.

What stunned me on my trips was coming back to Australia and stepping out into open sunshine... how bright it was - no clouds - no smog.

Cardiff (especially Roald Dahl Plass), I saw Windsor Castle and passed the Milennium Gasworks (where they filmed Silver Nemesis), near St Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Bridge (though not quite where the Cybermen and Daleks invaded), Shakespeare's Globe (where they filmed The Shakespeare Code), Brighton (but due to the weather, did not go down to the beach itself to pay my respects to K9), Leeds Castle (used in The Androids of Tara) and possibly a few others I cannot quite recall, but the purpose of the trip was not to look for Doctor Who locations, or else I may have been able to persuade TC to go to Aldbourne (site of The Daemons).

Other small places used for filming TV shows that we visited or passed included Lacock and Castle Combe (The Wolfman and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince were recently filmed in Lacock with others also being filmed there, and The Wolfman and Stardust were filmed, at least partially, in Castle Combe, along with Dr Dolittle, the original), Doune Castle (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, though due to time, we couldn't get in), not to mention a lot of locations in the Highlands used in the film Highlander.

Anyway, be patient, gbollard. After all, my next blog entry details my meetings with not just one, but two celebrities. And you'll be green with envy once you find out the identity of one... :)

In answer to your second question, if you count Bath and the Cotswolds, as well as Salisbury Plain, yes.

You get a better taste of the real England (what's left of it) if you get away from London and the southeast. The Cotswolds are nice, as generally speaking the area is rural, affluent, and has avoided multicultural "enrichment". I was up there last week, and there was still snow on the ground, but I imagine you're going to tell us about that in your next blog entry. Did you see your partner-in-crime, lau, whilst over here?

I have to say, you picked the worst time of year to visit as far as weather goes. Even us hardy denizens of the rural west find the winter months a little bleak, at times. Do you think you'll be back?

Travel memories are nice. I have no money for air travel, Must be nice to have pocket change for that. Good for you to be back safe and sound. :)

Quatermass would have saved for a long time to do it. It's sort of an "Australian tradition" to visit overseas when you finish school/university.

When I did it the first time, I was using all of my savings from my childhood - but it was worth it.

Travel really does broaden the mind, it helps you "grow yourself" and I'd strongly recommend that everyone give it a shot before they get into committments. (eg: house, family etc).

Quatermass... has found... the one... from the TARDIS? Excellent.

Though it would have had more excellence if his response had been "Australia?? AUSTRALIA?!?!?" when you told him where you were from. (For those unfamiliar with Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor, he had a tendency to repeat what his companions said with extreme disbelief.)

My thoughts on your second post...

According to you, the UK seems to be full of frustrated actors - all looking for a part on Dr Who or Torchwood. Very amusing... The British have this amazing theatrical quality don't they.

---

My favourite bit of Stratford-upon-Avon, was Shakespeare's child minding device in his kitchen. Basically a stick in the middle of the room (floor to roof) that the kid gets chained to so that they can wander around in circles without getting into trouble - and just out of reach of anything that could burn them.

There was even a little furrow where the poor blighters had been walking in circles.

---

I was surprised about the Quatermass remake being R2 only. All the Doctor Who DVDs are R2/R4. Including the movie which is unobtainable here in Australia (I've got it for collector reasons - not because it's any good).

Good call on Varos... Make sure you're listening to the commentary when the guys in "Nappies" run out.

---

The scriptbook of The Quatermass Experiment.
Whoa... now you're getting me jealous. Good find.

---

Bath.... How many silly tourists did you see with Towels?

Bill Bailey... aw... you could have quoted him once loudly and that would have let you know if he was going to be genial..

Wow... Colin Baker singing... That would have been interesting.

btw: I'd have been green with envy had I not caught Colin in Galaxy Bookshop Sydney only about 3 years ago.

Cool... I don't know what you mean by "it got worse" because so far it seems to be getting better.

No to both questions.

Be patient. I will update the blog next week. But no, I didn't go to the north. I did go to Scotland and Edinburgh.

Okay, now you're just being silly.

I didn't want to take the chance of pissing him off, especially as almost all of the Black Books quotes I know are Bernard Black's. I couldn't just scream "MANNY!"

Bugger, that's that backfired.

And you'll have to wait for the next blog entry (possibly Sunday night, Monday Australian time) to find out how some things went pearshaped, and others went swimmingly. And why it is inadvisable not to approach Loch Ness without Antarctic gear.
