Never had a Mac but they seem okay.
I think it's easiest to have Windows because most people do so most stuff is made for Windows and might not work on other things.

dont need to be very good with computers to get linux installed/working unless have got difficult hardware that is not supported though is unlikely now, download WUBI: http://wubi.sourceforge.net/
it will install any main version of ubuntu into the windows partition,cant mess it up like can with installing it manually.
though ubuntu [from official disc] is near enough as easy to install as windows.

My favorite is XP. I currently have Vista on both of my laptops---I do not like Vista. One reason is that Vista has so far not worked well for music applications that I wanted to use. For example, I have miditzer downloaded on my Vista laptop---I midi that to the digital organ at church (I am the church organist) and it locks up most of the time. My wife's computer has XP and the miditzer program there works fine on the organ. So in order to run midizer (theatre pipe organ sampler) on the church organ I must use her computer.

I have read that many musicians dislike Vista because it is not music friendly.

For that reason, I voted for XP as my favorite. I hope your assignment goes well.

Heck, I'm still using Windows 2000 on this computer (XP on the other). It's stable, bugs worked out, and no real complaints.

Still, they should have included Linux...;)
