WP made me happy. Last night, but I didn't post about it. And on many other occasions too.
I know we're all people, so we sometimes disagree, we sometimes annoy each other, sometimes misunderstand. But we're people. We're a bunch of human beings sitting together online, and we can talk instantly over hours and thousands of miles of travel distance.
It feels like a "common room" here, like a comfortable lounge. There are "nooks" where people can sit and talk or play math/language/online games or share their art or authorship or music. There are lively discussions that people can just sit and "listen" to, learning about other points of view, or "nod encouragement" in, or jump in and join with both hands and a shovel.
I have been more at ease and more fully myself on this forum that I've been able to be in many real life settings for a long time, because the Aspie thing doesn't get in the way - I have not felt that the first response from anyone is "oh, you're *different*" (even though we vary widely here!) [Another perennial favorite: "you think too much/all the time!" as if thought were intrinsically bad.]
And I've seen more decency and more simple kindness here in three months than I've seen IRL in many years.
I've seen pain, too, and frustration, and loss, and people trying to love as best they can in the face of terrible obstacles. I wish to God that I had answers, solutions, help for it, but the amazing thing is that people here don't turn away from it - people move towards it, almost universally, to offer what comfort they can. Do you KNOW how incredible that is?
And no, I'm not idealizing. People are people and do people things, good and bad, we mess up, we move on as best we can. But I've seen a lot of good here. Maybe reading this will comfort or uplift someone else.
Warm wishes to all.
[Edit in: oh, holy crap, this is Callahan's Crosstime Saloon. Spider Robinson would be proud as hell, and I *think* he's on the spectrum, so he'd be even prouder.]
