1. Aren't we all prescriptivists by nature?

Yes we are....at least partially.

But I do believe in the dynamic nature of language. And that, like the Constitution, we have to adapt to it.

If a person was a staunch Prescriptivist, we'd still be speaking like we did in the 18th century----the golden age of Prescriptivism.

Very true, but I do have difficulty with innuendo and had to learn colloquial language by rote.

I do, too. But I'm still fascinated by connotation.

I wish we had a "Dictionary of Connotations."

1. I once called Roget's Thesaurus "Roget's Clitoris."

2. I found out that one definition of "soda" from the 16th century was: "A stomachache."

3. I decided, once and for all, that I must follow the precepts of "The Joy of Sex."

Correctimundo!

"The Joy of Sex" relies too much on acrobatics, not enough on substance.

Do you like people like Sir Walter Scott?

He was sort of the “dime store” novelist of his day, disdained by “serious” types.

Yes, very much. The Brontës adored him.

"On July 4th 1834 Charlotte Bronte wrote to her friend Ellen Nussey offering advice about what should be read when it came to novel reading. The advice was uncompromising: For fiction—read Scott alone; all novels after his are worthless."

I read Rob Roy and quite enjoyed it. I'd like to read Ivanhoe.

Do you like Historical Fiction in general?

Yes, I do but I seldom have time for the genre apart from my current interests. I'm wound up in my obsessive need for Brontëana, including biographies and non-fiction about the family and the social history of West Yorkshire.

It’s an understandable obsession....

Alas, I haven't been. In order for me to get there, I'd have to learn to drive manual transmission. Will you teach me?

I knew....there was a special scent wafting in this room

Migraine gone. Whew.

1. I'm afraid of parrots because they look like they know too much, and can possibly strategize.

2. I always wanted an Old English Sheepdog. I plan to name him Godot because I've been waiting so long.

3. I might adopt a jet black, female kitten found by my nephew. I'll give her a Wuthering Heights name.
