I really want/need a new truck, but damn are those prices high
totally. used trucks tend to keep their value i noticed, especially the toyota ones.
ford wants almost 100 grand for their new top of the line truck. for that price, it better have a d*** massager and the ability to tow literal mountains and ford [ha] seriously deep streams. you can get an S klasse for that money.
using it for work?
i suppose part of the price rise has to do with the transformation of trucks from honest, barebones work vehicles into luxury SUVs with beds...or course they're going to charge more for all the extra bling you get in the nonfleet versions.
can you even still get a brand new, short bed single cab pickup here? i read about one instance of someone ordering such a thing (f150) and their request being rejected by a dealership. something like that. guess it's very easy to upsell from there.
chicken tax doesn't to many favors. even GM is reluctant to call their colorado a "small truck" (well...it is midsized), using the term "smart sized". huh? is small size somehow a sin against truckdom? why is the new ranger so fat? why don't we get the hilix, the amarok....
....where was i?
anyway, i hope you get what you're looking for.
I am looking at large diesels, such as F450/550 or 4500/5500 from both Ford and Ram. So even high miles used examples are expensive (to the point, I assume to buy new). I will be using it for work, long distance traveling, and as my commuter around town. So I want some creature comforts; heated and cooled leather seats, blind spot monitoring, retractable steps, just to name a few. I am looking at chassis cab models, as I will be having a aftermarket bed installed (similar to below, but in black). Oddly, it doesn't seem that much more expensive to step up to a Lariat or Larmie, from XLT or SLT. Extra $10-15,000 luxury really isn't much, when the base truck is already nearing $50,000 for crew cab, 4x4, diesel and upgraded towing packages. May as well spend a bit more and be comfy on the road. It helps when the top models have tons of rebates, the King Ranch I looked at had $13,xxx in discounts.
You can still get regular cab short box F150's in base trim. More optioned out is usually special order, a neighbor has an F150 Tremor edition. Problem I have with the smaller, mid size trucks is they cost as much as their big brothers F150, 1500, Tundra. Even though they do better off road and that needs to be the market they should aim for. Weekend warrior who lives in apartment; wants something easy to drive, yet capable, and good fuel economy with a small diesel motor (GM is moving toward that, seen a bunch of the Duramax in my area).
