I wish i could stop you from doing this, but i am a writer and avid reader myself, so i cannot stop you

I'm going to make an oath to you. I will not purchase another book until ... August 1st.
Wow. Do I push send? Can I? Will I? I loathe to break a promise.

Done. Thanks.

I will take this oath seriously!

But i won't judge you if you end up buying another book before the first of August...
Trust me, i drive my wife crazy with my will to buy everything i am interested in. I can absolutely relate to what you're going through. And it is not just done with books...

Thanks for understanding, Robot!
I just counted and I've ordered sixteen books since June 20th:

- eleven Brontë biographies and collections (will bring me to 60 Brontë books, for three sisters who wrote 7 novels...)
- Middlemarch and Silas Marner, because I lost my copies somehow
- The Return of the Native and The Woodlanders, because I've always wanted to read them
- Frankenstein (why not...)

Most are new but I'm picky about editions so many are from vintage bookshops.

Stop me now. I haven't even read all the books I do own.

I keep my word.

Solidarity,
Isabella :)

PS. What do you read / collect?

I think I skimmed through it in undergrad for a comparison paper, but I really don't remember the details.
I hope so. It will likely be some time before I get to it, though!! !

Don't forget I'm often reading with double vision!

I am also very picky about the editions, but since i am always out of money i mostly cannot even afford the hard cover versions... Trust me, i would rather have the better versions, but the money is almost always non-existent.

It is very impressive that you are attempting to go through this.

If you make this happen, i will show you my appreciation by buying a book that you want. I PROMISE! (and i always keep them!).

That's very kind of you. I'll settle for a hearty congratulatory salute at 12:01 a.m. on 1 August. :P

I don't purchase hard covers unless they are first or early editions, and in very good shape. I wouldn't be able to find most of my books in hard cover or early edition, anyway. I'm happy with soft cover and paperback books provided they are published by Oxford, Cambridge, Norton or Penguin Classic Press and they have reputable scholarly notes. I particularly like introductions by Tim Dolan, Christine Alexander or Juliet Barker in my Victorian novels. My oldest book is a leather-bound, 1901 edition of Villette. I'd certainly faint and die to have a 19th C edition of Wuthering Heights, published by Thomas Newby.

What do you like to read? (I suppose I'm changing threads, now) -- I'm interviewing you. :)

Ha -- I found a first edition WH for £130, 000 ($250 000 USD). Perhaps you can pick it up for me?

I found exactly the garden statue I've been wanting, badly, as a memorial to a wonderful cottontail rabbit who lived in my yard and raised her little ones here for several years. Now two of her daughters are raising their babies here. You can't see it in this pic, but they got the tail absolutely perfect.

That is amazing!!

I got my renewal quote for home insurance today, and it was 10% higher than last year. I phoned them up and told them I wasn't too happy about it, and the guy I spoke to immediately cancelled the increase and let me renew at last year's price.

All very pleasing in one sense, but on the other hand these companies are just trying it on, in the knowledge that some people won't notice the increase, or won't be bothered to challenge it. Insurance is bordering on being a criminal racket, IMO.

I received an email saying three of the books I ordered have been successfully delivered to me! (I'm not home).

(I've received The Woodlanders, The Return of the Native and Frankenstein).

Three down, thirteen yet to arrive, but I'll have a happy homecoming later tonight :)

Just got back from a lovely late evening stroll where I got to watch three young foxes playing in the last of the sun.

^^^   one for each kit. :D

I saw a hummingbird feeding on the native plants in my yard. There were ripe grumichama cherries to snack on. Evening brought a beautiful rainbow.
