the thai basil in the window appears to be safe with new leaves growing rather quickly. had it alongside cilantro, and “organic” mint before isolating it.
the mint came with caterpillar hitchhikers. only one that made it after a few days of not knowing what was happening was the basil... luckily the ravenous buggers only got a quarter of it before being evicted.

made it back from shopping at the asian market and grocery store in 113˚f/45˚c heat without feeling wreaked. was lucky enough to shadow hop between stores fast enough to get a bus back without waiting long... having just barely made the bus there, that felt extra lucky.
had to go today because those buses don’t run on weekends.

113F? Is that normal for your area at this time of year? (My part of Maryland has been acting like Oregon for three months - rain rain rain - so I'm assuming everyone else's weather is out of whack somehow, too.)

I got my roof re-shingled *BEFORE* it started to leak
got a new skylight - low profile double pane glass (the old one was double pane Plexiglass. It never leaked but the seal was starting to go and it never insulated well. I just hope this new one was installed as well as the old one had been.)
This all happened yesterday, I was up at 4:30 so I could be scrubbed and dressed before the crew arrived, since the skylight is in my main bathroom . They showed up bright and early, it was cloudy and cooler (yay for them) and they were about 80% done before the sun finally broke through in the early afternoon.
I provided lots and lots of bottled water and catered their lunch
Have to laugh, because the roof is warrantied for the owner's lifetime (I've read the warranty thoroughly, hurrah for Asperger's) but if I sell my home the poor buyer only gets warrantied for 40 years. Awwwww.
One great part was when the shingles were delivered. They used a crane truck so I got to see them using this portable crane to lift the load of shingles up to my rooftop, where the crew picked them off and placed them in a couple different spots. The neighbor kids (and some of the retired guys) enjoyed watching that as much as I did, maybe more
I stayed in all day to keep my cats from panicking - one decided that since I was calm during all the hammering, it must not be an issue, but she stayed by my side all day. The other one decided that since I was calm during all that noise I must be either deaf or nuts, and she stayed under the bed all day.
Today we're supposed to have some showers which I look forward to so I can run around and confirm the integrity of the roof... I believe they did a very good job, but whenever something old is replaced, it's wise to be sure all is well...
Oh and, I almost forgot, it looks SO nice now. It was nice before, kind of a cottagey look, but it looks even nicer now.
Here's a treat for heavy equipment lovers: sorry it's in French but this was the best demo I found
Oh, it was fun, in spite of the unavoidable noise! What's also been fun is that pretty much all my nearby neighbors who are retired, or their kids who are out of school at this point, seem to have watched the roofers and a lot of them watched the truck deliver the shingles. So everytime I go outside now, someone going past waves and tells me about how awesome the crew was and stuff.
I've given the contractors' name out to about ten different people at this point and I hope they get a LOT of new business.
What's not to love? I got a fantastic looking new roof and the neighborhood got hours of wholesome family entertainment and I'm only joking a tiny bit about that.
