I think DVD is much better. I lived in a flat with damp problems which wrecked all my VCR tapes. I also much prefer MP3 to cassette tapes.

Used to love bombing up and down the M6 listening to my cassette tapes when I lived in Reading, Berkshire and was working in electronics. Mainly the likes of the Pet Shop Boys, Bryan Adams and Simple Minds.

No, just an orange Mini which was a complete nightmare (lucky I was in the RAC) and then a lime green Vauxhall Chevette saloon which was much better.

I got my first VCR around 1984, so I wasn't the first but they were still on the rise. Cost about £500, which was a lot in those days. I noticed that after getting it I'd spent days reading the manual and trying out all the things it could do, and that was the first time I realised that I could get obsessional about things.

A bit. It freed me from having to be around when the programmes were airing live. And I could watch a programme as many times as I wanted. I was starting to get suspicious of just having the TV on all the time showing what the TV station owners wanted me to see, so I really took to the on-demand thing.

Lol I've never heard that expression. What does it mean and how?

"If you say that one thing knocks another thing into a cocked hat, you mean that it is much better or much more significant than the other thing."
https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dicti ... cocked-hat
When I used it I meant that taters are a lot better than rice.

It can also mean
"Completely nullify, overthrow, demolish, or otherwise defeat an idea, proposition, or argument."
https://www.wordnik.com/words/knock%20i ... cked%20hat

I've seen it used as a threat, e.g. "Back off, or I'll knock you into a cocked hat."

The exact origins of the phrase are unknown.
I gather it's more correct to say knock(ed) into a cocked hat, but what the hell.

They still are in my house, at least when I'm home.

Sadly that's as close as I'll ever get to owning one.

Might it be the strain of rice you're buying? Some rice (like basmati) is aromatic.
