i've heard that people in that industry are often like that, which is why companies like google (brother in law works there)really foster a positive working environment. it kind of seems like some people in software really push themselves simply because it is necessary and they want to do it. it seems heavenly to be able to work in a job where overdrive is the norm

I think the overdrive aspect is what puts me off any kind of software programming. In the college course I done we did a small amount of it so I got a taster. While I could do it fine and felt quite focused while doing it, it stressed me out when I couldn't get something to work right and stress = :(

Perhaps you're more creative than you are logical? I wish I was more creative at times, so I would be a better drawer

I draw from time to time, in the hopes of becoming better at it (eventually). I don't take too many pictures unless I'm somewhere interesting, but I do enjoy looking at photography. :)
I spent 2 years doing computer networking. But right now, I'm at a crossroads as to what to do next!

when i am drawing realistically, i practice with photographs etc. it helps because my mind creates a sort of grid on the paper and on the original, so that everything goes nicely in the right place. some people evn draw out a grid on the original and on the paper. it's good practice for realism

My mate's a commercial illustrator. Grids are a norm, and some of the 'tricks' would suprise you.

I've got one of those. Worst two years of my life. Comp Sci rather than Networking, there wasn't enough numbers for that.
In your position, I'd go for a CCEA, set yourself up as a LTD company/contractor and pimp yourself to agencies that'll hook you up with PMs.

Work your ass off for 5 years and keep you head down, maintain a good track record and don't let anyone down and you could end up in a situation where you only work 6 months of the year.

I know someone who gets his work through temp agencies and has done for a good while. Apparently the pay is good but sometimes he can be off for months at a time. I don't think I will be continuing networking anyway. Overall I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

Yeah, it's usually 3 month contracts, but two of those can often pay for a full 12.

i don't know too many tricks. i started off using measurements (and still do a bit of that informally, like use my thumb or pencil for sizing). now i've sort of internalised the grid. oh, one trick i use is to hold my semi-finished project up in the mirror and also look at it inside out***. it makes me notice the irregularities.

***EDIT: erm, i mean upside down. i don't know how i would turn a project inside-out.

You don't want to know the tricks, anyway. Disillusionment follows.
