I know how that feels... that's why I learned to whistle while breathing in and while exhaling.

 Likewise. I did this constantly as a kid. In hindsight, probably drove a few people crazy.

Couldn't buy any syrup on Pancake Day of all days, had to make do with honey instead. Not complaining too much though.

Here is what I had Pancake-wise today:

* 2 pancakes with bacon and honey.

* 2 pancakes with crushed Oreos and whipped cream.

* 2 pancakes with lemon juice and sugar. (For a more traditional finish.)

Yum!

First a great writer and now a very good film. :thumright: I like it.

Thanks; you a fan of Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki?

I am, though there are a couple I haven't gotten around to seeing quite yet (Laputa, Ponyo). In general, I'm not a huge anime fan, but there are some I enjoy very much, and anything Miyazaki is among them. I actually wrote a paper on Grave of the Fireflies in high school.

I'm not really a big fan of anime/manga, either. I love Doraemon and Miyazaki films... and that's about it.
Ponyo was pretty good... I'd definitely suggest seeing it in Japanese (if you don't know the language... English subtitles. I remember you posting something about going to Japan... or was that you... anyways, yeah. I'm not sure if you prefer dubs or subs, but if you don't already know, dubs suck, especially with Miyazaki films.)

Yes, I understand Japanese. Even when I don't know the language, though, I prefer subtitles. Dubbing, even when done well, just never seems quite the same to me. And thanks for the recommendation--I do intend to get to it one of these days.

I aspire to learn it. I know how to say simple things like 私は音楽が大好きです。。。 Or 私の名前はジェーン。。。 私はドラえもんが好きです; ありがとう。。。 etc. Very basic conversation/observation/introduction stuff.
My friend is from Sapporo, Hokkaido, so I'm learning it from her, and also from movies, television shows, music, and books. I got Rosetta Stone, but it hasn't really held my interest; it goes too slowly for me. I prefer pacing myself... which is unfortunate because my parents spent some good money on RS. Ah, well.

Are you Japanese, or is it a second/third/etc. language for you?

I actually first learned to whistle by breathing in, and now I can do it both ways, but I've been whistling a ton for over an hour, so I was losing my breath. :D

But I'm home alone, so I can whistle as much and as loud as I want; it's lots of fun. 8)

JMNixon: I'd love to go to Sapporo sometime, their winter festivals are awesome. :o

It's a second language. I enjoyed the little bit of Rosetta Stone I used, but I mostly just kind of used it as an entertainment tool after I no longer needed it, so I don't know how good it is for learning. Seemed decent, though. I could recommend some books if that is your learning style and you're looking for some. I think watching TV and movies in Japanese is a great way to learn, particularly when supplemented with some more traditional studying (like using books). Music isn't very helpful for more than a bit of vocabulary, however, because the way lyrics are written is not usually the way people speak. And reading is always good, of course. がんばってください。 ;)

I actually know what that last bit means; I'm pretty proficient with hiragana and very basic kanji. I don't know as many katakana, though... literally five or ten. 8O

Yes, books would be nice; thank you! I have a phrasebook.

I don't get it. :?: Not gun-carrying security, she works for Boeing and keeps confidential files and rooms locked, and sometimes escorts people around the building, since they can't be in there on their own. ;)

Trying to communicate with these creatures is an exercise in futility. One of these days, I'll learn this and not bother trying to communicate anything more complicated than "Hi! How are you? How's your sports team? Sure is cold out."
