I first watched The Olympics in the Summer of 1984 when I was 9. I remember Mary Lou Retton winning all those medals for the US in Gymnastics. I also remember all the medals that Canada won. I also have fond memories of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

Cats-again and always

Watching vintage Olympic Games marathon footage from Helsinki, Melbourne and Tokyo.

Abebe Bikila was an outstanding marathon runner and led the way for Ethiopia in the Olympic Games.

I also enjoyed watching the friendship and rivalry between Emil Zatopek (Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic) and Alain Mimoun, born in Algeria and representing France. They said that Alain Mimoun lost nine pounds during that hot, steamy race, amazing because he was only 135 pounds to start with. When he met Zatopek (sixth in 1956) at the finish line, the two embraced in a gesture of friendship. Five times before, the French Algerian runner had finished second to Emil on the track. (In between Mimoun and Zatopek that year were a Croatian then running for Yugoslavia, a Finn, a Korean runner and a Japanese runner). The top three, Mimoun, Mihalic and Karvonen, met for a 50th anniversary reunion to celebrate their Melbourne triumphs, the first time that all Olympic marathon medalists were still alive 50 years later.

Watching a movie about the 1896 Games in Athens-The First Olympic Games-Athens 1896. It starred Louis Jourdan as the Modern Games founder, Baron Pierre de Coubertain. Nicos Ziagos portrayed marathon champion Spiridon Louis.

Happy Birthday to Serbian tennis player Janko Tipsarevic. He is 35 today. He has come through a lot of illness and injuries recently and is still playing. I was concerned that he would have to retire completely after multiple foot surgeries.
