I have everything I need to convert my car to a straight pipe this weekend. Technically it won't be a 'true' straight pipe since I'll still have a cat and one resonator, but bye-bye muffler. It'll be nice to have a car that backfires when I let off the gas again.

In theory, (My theory) if the straight pipe is long enough the sound waves will be somewhat quietened by the time the sound comes out the exhaust, so if you had a very long pipe sticcing 60 or 70ft out the back of the car, would it sound quieter without reducing the performance? This is in theory... I know it is not practical. Is just me thinking aloud.

Thinking about it, it may not reduce the sound much....

Why would I want to reduce the sound volume? :?

I like powerful but quiet cars that sound powerful but subdued. Why do I want to wake everyone up if I drive past at night?

Me and the other half took my son to Blackpool to the pleasure beach today. He loved Nickleodeon land. I also realised I've created an adrenaline junkie! He's 7, he's autistic too, but by God he's fearless. He just wanted to go on bigger and bigger rides! Had a great day and got some lovely photos. Only just got home after dropping him off now. I'm beyond knackered!

My blue and pink Hydrangeas in my backyard garden. I'll be sure to get more of them next year if these survive.

length = backpressure. backpressure = resistance to the pistons exhaling exhaust. resistance = loss of power. you'd be better off devising some kind of electronic noise cancellation to cut the din sans increased backpressure. it has been done before.

Many people who change car exhausts to gain more power do not alter the mixture to cope with the different airflow.
Most car manufacturers aim for a balance between performance, economy and acceptable noise... Jus below the hill from me is a car race track. The wind takes the noise straight up here as if we were right by the cars on some days. We can also hear the roar sea as if we were sanding right by it at times. Yet we are over 2 miles away!

I think the manufacturer got my car about right. Two days ago I did a 15 mile journey and the cars computer was showing 72.3mpg average. Yet, the car seems to go well. I was spinning the wheels and drifting across the road in third gear a few days ago when I briefly showed off to my cousins eldest boy as he was criticising my car as I gave him a lift. He then started telling me off... But that's him! Haha. He didn't seem to understand what diesel engine "Chug" is and was saying there was something wrong with my car.. I was in third gear chugging through the car park at idling revs. (Is easier then using first or second as I just use the clutch to control the speed... When he complained I put my foot down in second as I was pulling out of the roundabout, then foot down in third... Both gears spinning the wheels like crazy. Hardly any point using first in that car unless I need to pull away on a hill or the traffic is moving at 1 to 2 mph which is what first gear idling speed would be.

Tom Waits on my playlist, I have a lot to look forward to, and I am about to take that first sip of coffee.
