I've watched a lot of Golden Age cartoons over the years that had characters doing things like getting drunk, chasing women, smoking, gambling, and even attempting suicide... but last night I saw a video about some early 1930's cartoons that were REALLY dark, even when they were intended to be humorous.
Seriously, there's this one cartoon about a kid named Scrappy. I soon found out that he's the *second* most evil Scrappy in the cartoon world.
In the cartoon he's going fishing with his dog, but his baby brother, I think his name was Oogy, wants to go with him and is following him and being a little pest. At first Scrappy just growls at him but when his brother won't stop following him he smacks Oogy so hard he sends the toddler flying several feet. But all this really does is slow Oogy down (the little guy's probably got brain damage, though), and he soon catches up and starts fishing at the pond near Scrappy. Their fishing lines get tangled up, which makes Scrappy so furious he throws Oogy the water. Oogy starts drowning and crying for help. Scrappy's dog looks upset by this, but Scrappy pretend not to hear Oogy. But then he decides to help him - not because he has a conscience, but because he has a vision of an electric chair which frightens him. If you're gonna kill someone, make sure there's no evidence!
So he pulls Oogy back out and there's a tense moment because Oogy doesn't appear to be breathing. But then he wakes up, and Scrappy is both relieved and even a bit tearful. But then Oogy says, "I wanna drink of water!" Scrappy then just tosses him back in the water and the cartoon ends.
Wow. Scrappy seems to have been a short-lived character, although many viewers probably thought he was cute and funny and just being a typical boy back then.
