Hmmmm....well at least if it was breaking down regularly then it was being maintained in a sense, however daft that sounds.
I've become increasingly paranoid about the whole idea of gas for heating, cooking etc. I really feel it's like having a bomb in your house. A guy who lived less than half a mile away from me blew his house up a few years ago, and half the buildings in the street had to be demolished and rebuilt.
Gas heating may well be only half the price of electric as far as the basic bills are concerned, but when you consider all the things that can and do go wrong, the repair bills must at least cancel out any savings. Regular boiler breakdowns, water leaks, gas leaks, pump failures, air locks....
