If we're going for something a little more hopeful, I'd say a book that will help me find food, given that if I have the the book then I have no gun and I'm going to have to have a go at actually living.

No a gun is not too morbid it can serve a variety of functions such as shooting a bird for food, being really fracken loud if you're trying to get a boats attention, and even instant suicide if you face dehydration or starvation which are both horrible ways to go.
