Well it won't kill you if you don't, but you'd be surprised at how much damage you can get by just casual sun exposure. The skin on my forearms looks about 20 years older than the skin on my butt, just from being outside (I live in LA).

It's not a big deal to me, but I could have prevented it with habitual sunscreen application.

That's what I thought. Well, in all fairness, from 9th grade till about half-way through senior year, I'd be out in teh sun every day running for a few hours (if you include stretching and getting there, etc, etc)... (Aside from sundays) and I'd like to see you get dressed and ready to run (As a girl) and still remember to put sunscreen on when you need to be outside impromptu (or almost) to stretch. I have freckles, and I know those are gonna come back to haunt me when I'm older but I'm gonna be moving out of here soon and I've only lived here for 14 years of my life (AZ...don't try and beat me on sun exprosure 8) )

But really, is that practical?

I am scared....I live in a sunny state....oh wait, you say I've lived here all of my life and been outside multiple times without sunscreen and lived to see the next day...yea.

The only time when tanning is bad is when you PURPOSELY lay out in the sun WITH THE INTENT of getting tan.

It would honestly make me crazy if I tried to put sunscreen on every time I went outside here.

Not so. Melanoma is much higher in places where the temp is higher like the desert. Obviously, you won't die or have an adverse reaction beyond a sunburn right away, but I could probably dig up pictures of my ex grandmother-in-law who has to periodically get parts of her skin cut off (so she literally has HOLES) from her face due to simply living in the California desert most of her life.

Now, I'm not saying you should freak out but maybe you're being a tad passive about this. Sunscreen at the very least when you're out in the sun for more than an hour couldn't hurt.

This^

Non-melanoma skin cancer rarely kills but it is VERY common and looks awful. I worked with dermatologists for the majority of my career, and they have a special UV camera which shows sub-clinical (not visible yet) sun damage. You'd be shocked at what some very young people who spend a lot of time in the sun look like with it - it's a very effective tool for convincing people to wear sunscreen when they can see what they are going to look like in 20 years.

I never had a problem with it.

I know that, my dad's a freaking pathologist....if I were at risk, he'd probably tell me. My grandma has lived in arizona for many many years of her life and her biggest problem isn't that but something completely unrelated.

I won't. 8) See what I said to Grisha, the time in my life when I was outside the most, it was near impossible to get it on in time without being the last one out/getting all the stretching in, etc etc.

Oh, and Makayla, you look pretty ...I like the purple teddy bear watching you from the corner xD

When I did have regular sun exposure was the time when I was running....already explained that. Plus, I have a hard time keeping routines....it is a real challenge for me.

Hmmm, well, I am still not convinced, I rarely went out in the sun this summer and my parents would tell me if I was spending too much time in it twere I not to recognize the effects.

Parents are people, like you and me- I'm sure my Papaw's parents would have preferred not to think their son would get skin cancer, but nothing was thought in those days about having one's children in the summer sun helping harvest tobacco. You're recommended to use sunscreen all the time, actually.

"Sun exposure is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers, including melanoma. You can have fun in the sun and decrease your risk of skin cancer. Here's how to Be Sun Smart:

1. Generously apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or more to all exposed skin. “Broad-spectrum” provides protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Reapply approximately every two hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating."

American Academy of Dermatology

I have really fair skin, and turn like a lobster whenever I'm out in the sun for more than a few minutes-
it wasn't until my grandfather started having to have whole splotches of skin cut out of his back and arms that I started to take it seriously.
