My maternal grandmother changed her first name at least three times.

She had a Yiddish name that was probably changed at Ellis Island; a sort of “elegant” name; then a rather androgynous name (Jean was the name she used when I knew her).

So you'd be distant cousins? I remember when I was younger I had a friend from up in Nunavut and she always mentioned how she didn't want to date any Dogrib men because they're all her 2nd and 3rd cousins. Personally I don't really care about that level of familiarity since even first cousins don't matter unless it happens every generation.

No i dont think so
Bcuz lots of Hindu families after converting changed their names to things like ansari,
syed (which is fr family of Muhammad but non Arabs change their names to it out of misguided love..a sense of rewriting their ancestry )etc

My dads family took on Syed fr example n have vague idea they are descended but its not actually true imo

My sis says that most South Asian Muslim families claim to b descendants n therea no way of knowing in reality

Just a way to distance themselves frm their hindu roots our grandparents parents parents did this

Unnecessary n silly but i cant judge i guess.

I wonder if she had to do it out of discrimination faced at the time.

I'm about to get seriously obsessed with Genealogy again. I just have a few other obsessions to lay aside first. I already collect old photos of my ancestors, antique frames, and piles of notes about their lives. I'm looking forward to designing a large family tree diagram in the form of a wall mural, to link all the connections together.

Its always cool if someone in the family does this. I know your family will appreciate it. Super idea

The people at Ellis Island probably found her Yiddish name to be too difficult....and gave her a English name.

I'd prefer Ramone. That way everyone becomes a Ramone upon landing in NYC.

I have 2 nigerian friends from high school like that. I know them as Grace and Blessing but they wouldn't tell anyone their Nigerian names. First I thought they did it after converting like my dad's family

I guess it was what yiu said... Ease of pronunciation.

For what it's worth those sound typical of Nigerian names, at least as far as Christian Nigerians with English-derived names I've known. I know in a lot of communities Greek and Hebrew derived names are the most common Christian names, but it seems that English based names that aren't common among ethnic English are common there. Nigeria is part of the Anglosphere, for however much that means.

Did they mention having additional names at all and just say they'd rather use those ones?

'QUOTE' applied at the beginning of this nine-year, four month-old thread (with over 29000 posts - average of one post every 8 1/2 days).

How might TECH. data-processing help in assessing lengthy threads - to highlight posts that "stand-out" in originality in disc. threads containing tens of thousands of posts?

It’s interesting how many people will interpret things to be what they want to hear (or, if online, see), even when it’s blatantly obvious to everyone else that that is not what was intended to be said. And this includes people where a part of them secretly wants the things people say to be insults or something just so they have something to get upset about.

Everyone starts out with rounded cheeks and ends up with angular faces (comparatively to how they started out). People with round faces look younger than people with angular faces.
