I'm struggling for a second reference for my job. I don't have any contacts from my old jobs, I'm not in touch with any of my professors, and our vicar has retired so there goes the character reference. I don't know what to dooooooooooo.

Are you on good terms with your post office, I got a reference from the postmaster/postmistress. A retired vicar would work too imo. Are any of your neighbours friendly and in a job of good standing?

Passport applications allow guarantors from doctors, dentists, friends-of-family with good jobs, etc.
I hope it's the same.

Seriously though, I've written some really tight letters of recommendation for people over the years.
If you're interested I could swing it.
I'll use a UK phone number.

I have lots of traditional Canadian ornaments.
Handblown glass with black bears, from Banff.
Indigenous wood carvings from BC.
Crystal trinkets from Vieux-Montréal and Trois-Rivières
Holiday baubles from Newfoundland.

Is this for one book, or all of them?

You can't have all my precious's just the Bronte s**t (2 books out of a 3 volume set - book 3 was used as toilet paper)

Can I tempt you with a broken glass bell with bad memories attached, from St. Lawrence Fish Market?
Seems good for that fish wife of yours. :jester:

When I find them we can barter - deal?

But some of the first things you offered whet my GF's glass appetite.

You're welcome to my stuff, but it's not worth as much as yours.
I'll pay you the difference with beer and poutine.

Either, I suppose. It says they want professional if you have them, otherwise character will do. I have one professional one, but I've lost touch with all my other professional references (two of the places don't even exist any more).

So I think it will have to be character. But I'm not sociable enough to know anyone for that. I don't even know any of my professors well enough to ask them.

I don't think I'm on any terms with our post office, really. I use it but I don't know if they'd know me enough to give a reference, especially since it's not a local one any more. I didn't even know they did references tbh, maybe worth a try?

I'm not sure how to contact our vicar but I'll see if mum has anything. I saw him at work at Christmas so I know he's still around. I am friendly with our neighbours, but one set is retired, one is an heir so he doesn't really work-work, and the guy next door does some kind of car stuff or something. IDK it's big money lol but I never really understood what he does. He'd definitely speak favourably of me because his little girl comes over here to draw with me sometimes lol, but I don't know if he'd be appropriately 'professional'. My mum has lots of published Uni friends that don't really know me beyond a 'hi' lol, maybe one of them would do me a favour.

Thank you. I might genuinely take you up on that if I can't get anywhere. BUT I will try every which way else first, I wouldn't want to trouble you.

Speaking of cups and Brontë btw I saw some beautiful mugs in a shop in Hay the other week, they were by a designer called Jane Booth. I wanted to take a picture but I got the vibe that the shop lady was watching me so I didn't lol.

I'm sorry for the wall of text, I'm just thinking out loud.

Speaking of you guys' trinkets and knick-knacks, I was thinking a Show and Tell thread could be cool. Just so I could see cute things from around people's homes, or storied objects. But it's too much of an effort to post pictures.

^ Yes and they had about 10 of them, but all with different Pastoral books and scenes.

It's not my genre of choice so I wasn't tempted, but they were very pretty.

Just saw all this. Sorry  ADHD

I'd start with your mother's published Uni friends.

They know your life well enough via your mother to confirm you aren't a criminal, and she's likely told them about your exemplary performance in school too. If she hasn't, she can start now. A brief chat on the phone or even in writing (text etc.) should answer what they need to know. Mention academic awards, scholarships, and other distinctions you've earned.

The Vicar is another good choice if you can find him. Google should work. It doesn't matter if you don't know him personally. He knows OF you, by your family's connection and your family's reputation.

My daughter started her new job just a couple of months ago and she was afraid for the same reasons. She hasn't worked or been in school for a few years for health reasons. She chose a friend in UK who she's worked with in an informal capacity, and her best friend's mother, who works with charities and has known her since she was three. They didn't contact either one so she thought she didn't have the job. Then a week later they sent her the job contract without having contacted anyone, so she thought the references wouldn't be needed. Then they turned around and contacted her friend in UK by email to arrange a chat. She replied with her number but they didn't follow up, and my daughter started her job anyway.

It may not be the same for you but I think sometimes they're just going through the motions asking for these things, to make sure they aren't hiring someone with a criminal record. It would be easier if they just came out and asked.

Let me know, though.

I love your thread idea too, and the cups sound / look lovely!

I nicked Rachies idea and started a thread.
