I wish that wasn't true----but it is true! I can barely hammer in a nail LOL (I feel ashamed to admit it  )

I did Ikea once. It was pretty annoying but I figured it out. With all the (male) engineers in my family it's a shame I didn't take the time to learn more. I was always interested in mechanics, but told it wasn't for girls.

If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning.

Can you paint a room?

OOPS. Wrong topic.

1. I'm dyslexic.
2. I have OCD.
3. I'm claustrophobic.

Oh wait, those all are lies. Let me try again.

1. I'm very tired.
2. I love sushi.
3. I'm overheated right now.

Yep, and I have a few times for charities and stuff.

If you could write a novel, what would it be about?

It would be about a girl and her foundling brother who engage in a narcissistic relationship, ruining the lives of everyone around them. Oh, wait. That's Wuthering Heights.

Um. It would be about something like that.

I wish you could drop by and paint a room for me. I get dizzy looking upward for too long and I'm too impatient to do it carefully.

I'm thinking that you might actually like "confined spaces," somehow.

But I'm having my doubts about your "dyslexia."

Here's my final answer: #1! You are not dyslexic.

Right. I'm not dyslexic. I don't have OCD (I thought I did, but it's all stims). I'm only claustrophobic in mountain areas.
I do like small rooms like my snug. Open-concept freaks me out.

You're not overheated; you stated the weather where you are is cool and foggy.

Right. I'm actually cold. Time for tea. I am very tired but I can't sleep. My mind is on overdrive as usual.

Sushi -- never. Yam tempura all the way.

If I put my nose to the grindstone, I could probably build something from IKEA---but it would take hours!

1. I used to tell people that I had brain surgery.

2. I used to tell people that I "used" to be "ret*d."

3. I used to tell people that I was autistic.

Nope.

When I was 9 years old, I was fascinated by the kids at a school for "ret*d" children run by the Rego Park Jewish Center. I would spend hours looking at these kids play, stim, squeal, whatever. I wanted to hang out with them, talk to them.

One day, I was caught by one of the teachers, and was forcefully taken away. While he was grabbing my shirt, I said, "But I USED to be ret*d....."

That's hilarious in a sad way. I was drawn to autistic women without knowing the reason (or their diagnosis; we're quite elusive creatures).

So I guess yours is 3?

Yep. That's the correct answer.

It's because I didn't know about autism until age 9. Then, I thought only the classically autistic, nonverbal kid I knew was "autistic."

I thought I had brain surgery, and that's why I was able to talk. I didn't talk until I was 5 1/2 years old.

The "brain surgery" was actually an EEG.

I never heard of autism at all until I was about ... 30? I saw Rain Man when I was a teenager but I don't even remember learning the word autism from the film. I just thought the character was a unique personality. I didn't act like him so it didn't cross my mind to dig further. I finally heard the word autism when I was about 30. Even then, it was only for little boys who liked trains. Little boys who rocked and banged their heads. I had absolutely no clue. Zero, until a couple of years ago. I started to google about my sensory issues. I think that's how the realization started.

I've had several EEGs. Apparently I have abnormal "slow wave" activity in my temporal lobes. I can't remember if it's too much or too little. I don't even know if that's relevant. I also did a sleep study that said I never get to Delta wave sleep (the deepest, restorative level after REM). My mind is always on hyper-alert. I don't ever get refreshing sleep.

So, when were you actually diagnosed? How did that happen?

I was diagnosed with autism when I was about 3 years old.

I exhibited all the "classic" symptoms. I didn't say a word. Autism had very strict diagnostic criteria then. My parents were told that I would be "vegetable" for the rest of my life, and that I should be institutionalized.

My mother adamantly refused---because she "saw something in my eyes."

At age 5 1/2, I finally started speaking. My social behaviors improved, as well. I acted very much like a stereotypical "Aspergian." I told people I knew all the capitals of the world, and that I wanted them to ask me the question. I pleaded with them. I was a fact-based person, and had no social instincts.

A similar situation occurs in the book "Elijah's Cup." A kid who was classically-autistic when very young, then "Aspergian" later on.

So, you obviously had educational accommodations? Were you in an integrated classroom?

1. I love the smell of rubber (e.g., new dolls, water wings, rubber boots)
2. I love the smell of tar (e.g., asphalt, roofing, mechanic shops)
3. I love the smell of beauty parlours (e.g., nail polish, shampoo)
