I am staying in Denmark and went to the bakery this morning. My Danish is very basic and that's not good, because everytime I have to talk to people I do not know which language to speak - German or English? - plus, I simply hate it not to speak the language of the country where I am, even if it's just for a couple of days, like now.
So I went to the bakery and on the way I'd thought about absolutely needing to learn some more Danish before our next visit and damn, which language will be best at the bakery, not wanting to offend anyone by a tourist-approach. I stepped inside and before I finished the thought, I heard how I said "Hej, snakker du Tysk?" (Hi, do you speak German?) and the woman answered yes and it was no problem to order then. I would have been more comfortable if I had been able to order in Danish, but I was happy and proud I had just said the right thing, not being blocked by my thoughts. Last year I was so nervous at the bakery, I hardly managed to order in English - all words lost, replaced by some random Spanish words.
