WTC- was at cooking class, wandering why everyone was stareing at the TV, and the whole classroom suddenly washed the dishes and put stuff away with good haste. I went home thinking "What the heck? Is there a bomb threat or something?" Downtown was near by, the everyone seemed to be leaveing. I walk in after a two hour trip back and, gee my mother is home. Then she tells about it, and I thought "whaaat? "

Diana: attending a family get-together, when I heard the news on the radio.

Michael Jackson: I was working on an assignment for my public administration class I was taking over the summer, and doing online research.

9/11: I was getting ready to go to a doctor's appointment, and I was watching TV, and then I saw the smoke coming from the Twin Towers. I didn't think it was a terrorist act until I saw that the Pentagon had been attacked as well.

Pope John Paul II: My parents and I were on a picnic at the San Jacinto Battleground, and we were listening to the radio. It was sunny, and cool, but very windy that day.

I really don't remember much about Princess Diana's death because I was only 6 at the time and had no idea who she was. I very vaguely remember hearing something about it on the news.


I heard something about Michael Jackson being in a coma or something but I didn't find out that he had actually died until a few hours later.


I remember this very well, actually. I was in the 4th grade at the time and my social studies teacher had assigned us something in which we record the weather forecast each afternoon. On the day of the attacks after coming home from school, I flipped the television onto the news anticipating the weather, but all they were talking about was some burning skyskraper in New York City. I had no idea what was going on and at the time I didn't really care, because I was impatiently waiting for them to get to the weather. I don't remember how I found out exactly what happened.


I don't remember, I just know that I was in the 10th grade when he died. His death didn't really have an impact on me.

Diana: I was shopping and walked through an electrical store. I saw a small crowd gathering around the television display, joined them curiously, and there it was.

Michael Jackson: I vaguely remember being at work, the local state high school, on the oval supervising a sporting event of some kind. I over heard some students discussing it. I didn't buy it until I saw it on the television that evening.

9/11: My husband woke me up at 4:30am saying things like... "Oh my God! I don't believe this! Come and watch this! Look what's happened!"... He was on his way to work and heard it on the radio. He came back home to tell me. Watching it on TV was surreal...It shook me to the very core...

The Pope: I do remember finding out the news...but can't recall where I was or what I was doing...

I heard about Diana right after I killed my first hamster... (that was also the day I discovered they don't really taste like ham).

Don't remember/care about MJ...

I was at work, changing a gearbox on a chocolate mixer when the towers fell.

When the WTC was struck I was on North Street in Chelmsford MA. I can show you to within two feet where I was at the time.

Diana: Have no clue, didnt pay attention to her excistence before she didnt excist anymore....

Jackson: I was on a train going on vacation and saw a fellow passenger reading the newspaper with the text "MICHAEL JACKSON IS DEAD" on the front page. As I was riding first class I could go grab my own paper to read about it

WTC: I was at home, listening to the radio. When they talked strange about "a big event" I turned on the TV and stayed up all night watching CNN...

The Pope: Who? As Diana, some people dont get my attention at all and I dont care...


There was three very big local events in my area so far during my life, once with an enormous disaster killing almost thousands and two events where two very high, respected, and internationally famous persons was murdered. I can put memories to two of those events too

1. Diana - In my apartment in college. I thought it was so sad, especially for her kids. I felt sorry for her.

2. Jackson - This went on for like a month - I can't remember all that.

3. WTC - I was on the R train by ground zero on my way to work.I was probably on the last or second to last train to make it past world trade. I got out at 14th street to see the first tower mangled. It had been fine when I got on the train a few minutes earlier in Brooklyn - I remember looking at the towers just before going down into the subway. Out at 14th street, everyone was standing, stunned. After a few minutes I walked a long block to 5th avenue and stopped on the corner, looking south at the towers. There was no traffic, only sirens and people standing still on the corners looking up in silence - like a comic book. We just looked and while we were looking, the second tower was hit but we couldn't tell it was a plane because we were directly opposite from where the plane approached. We just suddenly saw a huge explosion. It sounded so strange - not like in movies at all. Then this young woman started crying hysterically trying to make a call on a pay phone but all the circuits were busy. Everyone just stood there, shocked. There was no traffic, only the occasional ambulance or police car flying by with its siren wailing and everyone would just watch them as they came into view and then disappeared. I went into work and we watched the news and then would look out the window to see it really happening. I got home to Brooklyn that afternoon and nothing was allowed over the bridges, so we didn't get any newspapers or anything for a few days.

After that, the R train, which had always been so crowded with WTC people was nearly empty - just empty seats where familiar strangers had always been.

4. JPII - I don't remember. It was the selection of the new pope that I found more interesting.

Diana- To young to remember

Jackson- I was listening to the radio and on the computer, and the DJ said he died, I turned on the TV and it was all over.

WTC- I dont know who that is

JPII- I dont know who that is

Princess Diana - I don't know. I would guess I overheard my parents talking about it, but I was too young to remember and comprehend it.

Michael Jackson - It was on a breaking news bar on an online news site. I had to wait for about five minutes for any details to come up; all it said was that he died. I was surprised, as he was rather young, and despite his health problems, he never seemed to be in that much danger.

WTC - It happened while I was in school; actually, we were taking class pictures, and one of the boys in my class had a seizure. Throughout the day, kids kept getting pulled out early and taken home, and none of the kids knew why. My mother picked us up that day (which was unusual, as we usually took the bus) and wouldn't let us listen to the radio; she told us shortly after we got home and showed us the footage on the news.

JPII - Actually, I have no idea. That's something I should remember, and it's something that should have interested me, but I just don't know. Probably on the news.
