I'm fascinated by chess. I'd love to learn to play it properly - I was apparently quite good at it for an 8 year old - and that was the last time I played it. I've been meaning to get involved with the local chess club - they're mainly older men with no pretentions or images to maintain, and I tend to get along well with such types. I like things that absorb all of my concentration, so maybe chess would qualify.

You hit on a major one for me. I absolutely love chess, and play it every single day. I play on an internet site, and sometimes with friends. My current elo is around 2100, which makes me an expert player. But I had a lot of help in order to get there. I have read many chess books and studied a ton of theory, as well as lots of instructional videos on the internet. This is the king of all board games, with literally unlimited possibilities. The game appeals to me so much, because of its logic. It is an entirely rational endeavor, where you cannot lie or cheat to win. It is a system of perfect information, meaning that both players have access to exactly the same amount of information. No more, no less. Just what is in front of you, in the configuration of the pieces on the 64 square board.

I love to play chess, but I'm a amatuer mostly because I don't play in ranked matches. So I wouldn't know how good I'm?

I'm not that good at chess. I like it, but I hardly ever play. There's always some tricky rule that I'm not aware of that causes me to lose the match.

Quoting myself from a past topic:

Quote:
I have a bizarre interest in chess, bizarre because I hate playing it. I have several books and like reading about the famous players and championships, but actually playing it brings me no pleasure at all. It's not just that I'm terrible at it; even when I manage to make a good move, I'm not enjoying myself. I can tell you all about the life of Bobby Fischer and plenty of other champions and the matches they played, but I'd rather lick a raccoon than actually play a game with anyone.

I'll certainly never again play traditional chess, since it favors preparation over skill. The best player is the one who memorizes ridiculous amounts of data, particularly openings. You have to devote your life to the game to be any good at it. If I ever play again, it'll only be Chess 960, aka Shuffle Chess, aka Fischer Random Chess. This is where you randomly shuffle the pieces on the back row, so that opening theory is useless and only the player's skill determines his performance.

So I was obsessed with Alice in Wonderland and Beyond the Looking Glass when I was 8-9 and read the books probably a hundred times or more. Further, I became obsessed with things in the books - one of them being chess. I learned the game, got a chess set, tried to play and failed and failed and failed. Even though I understood the rules and the tactics I found it hard to assemble these things into coherent strategies and never really managed to think farther than 1-3 moves ahead.

So I abandoned chess because as much as I liked it conceptually, it wasn't as fascinating as Through the Looking Glass and I never pulled much off with it (and still can't, I have tried). This did directly lead to my interest in wargaming, boardgaming, and RPGs, however, as I found it easier to work with more concrete and easier to visualize situations.

But chess and I never got along, as much as I wanted to.

I love chess; I'm rated about 1800 and think I could probably be better if I could just force myself to study more and be more patient at the board in tournaments.

I do enjoy chess although I'm not very good. I always enjoyed the game since I was 5 years old. I guess this is a little abnormal.

I'm more into Go (Wei-Qi/Baduk). If you like chess, you would probably also like Go.

I tried to learn a few years ago and never really picked it up. Since it's said to be strategically deeper than chess, I definitely want to give it another try one of these days with somebody who's willing to be patient with me.
