I mistake than and then quite often. I don't know why... I just don't get it.

I am not a grammar fascist. I am, however, a parakeet.

Yeah, that's not really an answer to my question. It's more of a "why not" to my "why". It just seems strange to me to intentionally avoid proper grammar and spelling, to go as far as editing your posts to make sure you've not used any apostrophies or capitals (in your case).
Note that I'm not condemning this, I simply don't understand it.

As for "writing uniquely" that can be easily accomplished while using proper grammar and spelling. One doesn't have to slice&dice words or make up new ones to have a unique way of writing. As an example I'll use one of WP's members, Sartresue, who has a unique way of writing without relinquishing grammar or spelling.

Alright, this might all seem a bit confrontational, for that I apologise, it wasn't my intent.

I understand what you mean just fine OneStepBeyond. I really don't see what the big freaking deal is about writing having to be perfect. I am NOT doing an english report so if people have problems with my spelling or something; it is THEIR PROBLEM. itz not like i'm typin like dis like sum peps do to be difrent & anoy oders. If I can read & understand it OK; I don't have a problem unless it's typed in all-caps. The main reason that annoys me is because it's a trend that is most used amongst spammers & trolls & it takes NO effort to leave the caps off instead

I'm a bit of a grammar nazi, a quiet one though. When I'm browsing and come upon poorly written posts or posts with exceptionally poor grammar, I'll grunt to myself or start writing a reply correcting the post, but then decide not to out of fear of appearing a jerk.
I'm well aware that my grammar and spelling isn't impecable, nor is my vocabulary extensive, so I give people room for error.

However, your/you're, their/they're/there, here/hear, etc. are grieveous violations and not tolerated. Even if I won't speak up, know that I'll be sitting here in my chair, grunting, grinding my teeth and being generally displeased. Especially if I discover the offending post was made by myself.

The same goes for me. I can't stand bad grammer. I'll even correct my parents, since they use bad grammer all the time. I get so upset at them. They'll say "he don't" or "she don't" ! I hate that one the most! They get mad at me for correcting them. Guess what? If I use the wrong word, I correct myself!

I don't mind short posts or certain grammatical errors. As others have posted, I can not stand mistakes that you would think only an eight year old would make (your/you're, then/than, their/there/they're).

The times a post will most definately drive me to madness is when the person decides to talk liek dis. Then, I'm just done.

i dont think its a big enough of an issue to require a reason. so why not indeed. im not really sure what you were refering to with the slicing and dicing of words. i doubt anyone intentionally makes spelling errors? i suspect most just probably dont care enough, nor see the need, to be meticulous in their posts. people need to stop getting snooty about it

I think you spelled "definately" wrong  I only know cuz spell-check has it underlined. I think talk "liek dis" could be a symptom of dyslexia. Putting letters in the wrong order when spelling words seems to be a common theme for dyslexics. My ex was the worst offender of it & she typed words wrong on purpose becuz it was faster & easier 2 spel words wrong like day sounded instead of spelin em corectly. I strongly dislike grammar police because I believe they are bullies. They are unsympathetic to learning disabilities. NOT everyone is capable of perfect english & those who are do NOT have to be d!cks by correcting others so they can appear smart by putting others down

My grammar is usually fine, because my degree is in English, but my posts are usually quite short and not proofread very well, because I'm impatient, have a really slow computer, and I'm usually multitasking.

Anyone else read a post for the words they are?

"Their has" or example. I have to translate it's true meaning ,whereas the correct spelling would mean faster and more efficient reading.

Capital letters (Caps Lock) is something I hate, I tend to read one word at a time slowly as it appears mainly to be a mess.

More than you know
I then went to the bank

As many people should know, I only ever write short posts 8)

Yes, ditto that. I'm also an extreme visual thinker so I tend to see visual images that correspond to what people have actually written rather than what they maybe intended to write. (e.g. short posts  ) Bad spelling and grammar can make someone's post difficult for me to understand or I misinterpret what they intended to say.

There have been some posts I gave up trying to read because I just couldn't make any sense of them due to their bad spelling and grammar. I'm not a grammar Nazi though, I understand some people have dyslexia or other literacy issues. My own grammar is not perfect.

I do hate text in all capitals or all bold - I find it virtually unreadable - or rather so uncomfortable to read I don't usually bother trying. I guess that is perhaps because I'm a visual thinker and the word shapes don't correspond to those in my memory, so I have to work out each and every word as I read the text which is then painfully slow.

I also dislike when people don't put punctuation in. I tend to breathe when I reach a full stop. Some people write sentences that are so long I've turned blue by the time I've read them! :smurf:

The thing that brought this thread on, was the grammar Nazi, who started a thread, about pet peaves, and I froze, when it was a rant about grammar and spelling. There have also been a few grammar Nazis joining this community since than, as well. I was feeling a little down, in the mouth when I started this thread. Grammar and spelling is a very touchy subject, because I know that I'll never measure up to the standards, of those people. I also think, with my heart.

Here's a part of an old song, that strikes a nerve with me.

"He spent all the money that he had, cause he had a heart, and not a head..."

I take things to heart, and I've been trying not to, my entire life.

Two things:

1. Don't worry about trying to live up to other peoples expectations and demands! There will always be someone who will try to put you down or criticise you; learn to ignore them and live life on your own terms not how others would try to have to live it! You will be a lot happier.

2. Your grammar and spelling looks fine to me. So maybe it is good - or we've both got bad grammar and spelling!
