Americans. Some of the friendliest, most generous lovely people I've known have been Americans. Maybe I've been spoilt, but I have a mental image of Americans as being very old fashioned in their values... in a good way.

If I had to pick one thing, it would have to be our Constitution, it's unique in the world and is the foundation of most of what's great about this country. I also love the melting pot nature of this place, it's sort of a cliche but a true one. Even on the small island I live on, my supermarket carries everything I need to cook Thai, Mexican, Indian or other exotic cuisines, and I'm not talking Trader Joe's simmer sauces. I'm in there buying Kaffir lime leaves and fish sauce, epazote and achiote, asefoetida and kalonji, just to name a few things off the top of my head; I doubt many other places in the world have the same variety that we do in within such easy reach.

in nyc. there are tons, of holidays there and the workweek is generally 35 hours rather than the 40 of the rest of the country.

How many days off work a year do people actualy have?

It depends on the company and as you probably already know people don't usually get as many vacation days here as in European countries. I worked for the State University and New York University where I got the equivalent of a month off a year, not including the Jewish holidays - all of which we had off. Most faculty there get the month of August plus 2 weeks in December and a week off in March for spring break. Outside of academia there, there are more days off than elsewhere in the US as well but it's not quite as generous. When I worked in publishing we had summer Fridays where you got every other Friday off for June-August.

Corporations here typically have the worst vacation benefits (usually only two weeks a year!) while academia has the best. I'm a teacher right now and I am just coming off of summer break which started in mid-June. Plus I'll get two weeks off in December and a week in May.

The fact that you can complain about anything without mysteriously disappearing the next day.

...at least in theory. I haven't tried complaining about specific people who might be able to do that.

(Btw, it's not America, it's the U.S.(A). One of my pet peeves.)

- The beautiful and different landscapes as well as people.

- The freedom to express your political and ideological beliefs....and we almost lost that right due to the patriot act.

- Women getting the same rights as men. We no longer have to live our lives being mothers or being constricted to a certain role that's assigned to us.

- The diversity of people and their ideals.

We aren't perfect...far from it but I do appreciate the many differences and ideals our 4 fathers put forth on this country. It's ashame so many of what was put forth in the constitution is being abused.

The variety of the landscape, and how it's not unfeasible to travel around every state by car on one big road trip.
