I think Japanese history is interesting, but I'm definitely not a Japan nut. I read extensively about Shinto a few years back and I do think of it as a very fascinating topic. I'm not that interested in modern Japanese culture, however. I'm not even a fan of Final Fantasy (GASP) and I've never liked anime. I actually am pretty annoyed with Japan, at least from ~1900 onward. At least Germany and most of the other Axis countries took responsibility for their actions in the Second World War... Japan actively represses information about their war crimes, which were extensive. I don't think of that as a very progressive attitude.
I've gotten in many an argument with Japanophiles about this. I think way too many people just gloss over this period of time and assume that Japan is only responsible for Dragon Ball and Pokemon, and not the Rape of Nanjing, or dropping plague bomblets on China, or the Bataan Death March, and countless other horrors

I don't that Aspies as such like Japan more than anyone else... many things Japanese have become popular in this country in recent years. If it was just us, Miyazaki films would still be hard to get our hands on.

If I were to look for an Aspie-related connection, it would be that there's a certain appeal in the automatic assumption that extra effort will be needed to communicate if you're speaking to a person from another country... Whereas in the culture native to you people assume you will respond as expected and ostracize you when you fail. Someone from a country as different from our as Japan is would be less likely to recognize the social awkwardness of an American Aspie, I should think, until they mix with more Americans.

They have so great technology.
And I really like their clothing style.

Let's praise the logic, adore Japan... (lalalala, Deine Lakaien's song, this one.)

I just like those sexy anime characters. If you've ever seen Full Metal Alchemist, I think Ed is pretty attractive for a drawing. He'd be so much more cuter if he wore his hair untied

I like the tiny trees, and I think the samurai are pretty cool. That's about it.

The games, anime, lifestyle and the culture.

They are also very honorable. I respect them.

As a country, its struggling to find its own identity and failing in my opinion...they are like the 14 year old kid who tries so hard to find his/her identity that he or she becomes a a poser for a while, just gathering fads and ideas from other countries and adapting it to themselves. Then again Japans been doing that since the 3rd century with China so its not surprising.

Do you think Japan should embrace a more widespread immigration? As it is now, they are SO insular it is causing their economy to implode. And they do nothing to make the gaijin living here feel very welcome.

I know it is a unique and homegenous culture, but I don't think they can stay this way for much longer.

Well I think they should open up immigration yes, maybe not widespread large scale immigration but some because any modern country needs to be multi cultural. Japan held on as long as they could but I think the modern world will catch up and become a part of Japan. I dont even mean having a large immigrant population, just one present because as it is Japans immigrant population is virtually zero or just visitors, someone like yourself is very rare id imagine (assuming your not Japanese). Their economy is imploding as you said, just look at their cell phone industry. They focused so much on Japanese phones they lost out to South Korea (samsung) in the worldwide market for high tech phones.

I hope they open immigration in Japan.. but if they do i'll bet they will limit it to only certain countries.

You can bet Korea will be shut off... bad blood between them for a long time. They will probably accept the wealthy elite from SE asia like vietnam, cambodia and such but definitely not China. India would be blocked out completely. Europeans/Americans (inc. Canada and S. America) would probably be accepted on a limited basis... its too big a risk to 'pollute' their gene pool (yes social thought is like that lol).

i love japan, and all their culture. from anything from their art to their weapons, to their social code. i think they have worked much harder than us in the past. and had a commitment to being nicer than us. and as for their technology and intelligence and originality. they are still far ahead of us. because any nation that can develop a robot that can walk up and down stairs can run can walk on uneven slopes. and can serve things to people are quite incredible.

I'm the opposite - I hate manga, anime and stuff though there IS that potential for my coming to like all things Japanese in me. I could release it if I wanted and tried harder.

lots of interesting points, but no mention of "Takeshi's castle" ..
i love almost everything i know about japan, hope to tour their at least once. ;) then if i became big in japan, maybe just relax and enjoy rather than strive for anything more.

edit: interesting fact, my great uncle was captured by the japanese during the war, but killed by the americans. he was 21 i think, poor fellow.

I've long been the same, modern Japanese culture is too Westernized, which is bad. They would've been better off staying isolated from the rest of the world. :P

I do like their video games, technology, and some anime/manga. I don't like the thought of actually living there, though. Stressful lifestyle, economy going down the toilet, high suicide rates...
