I don't care for them (here we have the ".99 Cent Store" and "Dollar Tree". When I was a little kid, we had five & ten stores such as Woolworths, Newbury's, and Kresge's. Those are all gone now, and the "dollar stores" of today, are not the same.

I used to go in the .99 Cent Store now & then, to see what they had, and it's usually just a bunch of paper and plastic Chinese-made crap for whatever is the next holiday, and some weird Mexican-origin canned foods, and funny off-brand copycat cleaning products. Much of it, can be bought at the regular grocery store for the same or less, and with a more current date. The only thing I will say that I've really made a great buy on at .99 Cent Store, was a batch of Diesel fuel sulfur additive, which was outlawed but stayed available in that store for years, while the existing stock sold off. It was $8 per bottle in regular stores when it was still legal, then only $1 per bottle (same size) at .99 Cent Stores. I bought hundreds of them! I still have a few on hand. (It's needed in older model Diesel cars that were built to need sulfur compounds in the fuel, which newer fuel does not have). Not putting it in each tank of fuel, causes the engine to go bad sooner.

LadySera -
The Dollar Store I shop at the most has the small aisles too. I usually wait until they are empty before I will go down one because I don't care for all that closeness either. I use to go to Big Lots in Arizona to shop when my kids were younger too. I haven't been to an Ollies but I have heard before that you can find some good books there.

I won't buy any clothes detergents, fabric softner, bleach from the Dollar Stores. I'm extremely loyal to the brands I use, Cheer, Clorox, Downey. I tried that Purex and some kind of fabric softner once and it was horrible. But there certainly are other things that are worth buying. I agree, you do have to find what works.
