i believe my intentions were not received in the way i intended for them to be received. when i bring up my own example, it is with people who are not satisfied with their own situation, it is a form of cold comfort that i offer to such people to remind them that it could always be worse. that is all i'm good for, to remind folks that things are relative. indeed, the knowledge that it could be worse is the only thing that keeps me on a more or less even keel, as well as to keep me on my toes when i'd rather just veg and get devoured by fate.
if that's the case, then I apologize. misreading intentions is sort of a hallmark of mine.

I fail to see how my response suggests that I don't believe that there are people who have it worse off than me. It is true. I do have a husband. He is a caring wonderful person and I am incredibly lucky to have him. I realize other people aren't that lucky. However, outside of my home, I am in no way socially successful.

I would never get a tattoo because I'm not into pain and I know for a fact that whatever design I would have chosen at 24 I would hate, now. However, I'm fascinated by the different designs and the permanent color.
When I was growing up, only the toughs and sluts got tattoos. Tattoos were a social thing as well as an anti-social thing. Outlaws could spot each other and intimidate weaker souls with their body art.
Now, every little, spoiled, snot-nosed kid who can whine money out of their parents has a tattoo. The only thing left worth noticing is design and a lot of today's tats are truly works of art - on skin! I tend to like the large tats that were designed all at once and accentuate the beauty of the human body. When I go to the gym, I stare and evaluate. There are also a lot of dumb tats. I saw a guy the other day with a white plastic patio chair on his arm. An arm chair - huh huh
As an older, natural woman who once upon a time had a smokin' hot body, I have to wonder how some of the tats I see will end up. Things sag while other things bag. I will be the only lady at the home without a tat - could be a good thing.
Piercings, more than three on an ear, creep me out. I wouldn't hire someone with facial piercings any more that I'd hire someone who constantly talked about root canals. I've actually left a restaurant because my waiter had a chain from his ear to his nose. I just couldn't handle it. That and it seems like an such incredible waste of money, for what? When people are starving?
I know, statement, yada, yada, it's who I am, I gotta be me.
It's all good. Fly away, be free!

I like both tattoos and piercings. I have 8 tattoos and an earring. I do not regret them. I got them for personal reasons that perhaps no one else will understand. Someone suggested people with tattoos lack original ideas of their own---well, I am proof that that is not an accurate statement. I am noted for original ideas. Someone else suggested tattoos as unhealthy---well, some research has indicated that tattoos help promote the body's defense mechanism against many illnesses. I used to be sick a lot, but much less after getting tattooed.

my original point was that it could always be worse. one person could feel like a loser but there will always be somebody worse off than that one person. but nobody wants to ever think of that for some reason, nobody wants to think about the less fortunate, they only have their attention focused on more successful people they envy for having more of whatever than they do. i'm guilty of this also, i have envy for people who have managed to have at least one mate. having the experience of having one mate is still better than never getting to have experienced such.
I think of the less fortunate quite often. Not to make myself feel better, mind you.

if i were wealthy [my proposed invention is necessarily costly] and somebody had invented a printed integrated circuit [powered by the peripheral nervous system] that i could get too'd onto my forearm where my watch would normally be, and if it were transparent until i tapped on it which would activate the E-ink display and show me the time and date and other pertinent info, then i'd be the first in line at the [high-tech] tattoo parlor. i could handle a PRACTICAL tattoo, as i am a practical person, above all.
I suppose if we are going to incriminate people for getting tattoos and piercings because it holds personal meaning or gives them confidence, we might as also incriminate people who dye their hair, wear expressive clothing, get aesthetic surgery, after all that's body modification also.

I have 4 tattoos, a nose piercing and several ear piercings. Each has its own significant personal meaning. I totally agree with Wolfheart on this one.
@unduki: Have you really looked closely at people working these days? I don't mean uppity-ups in high-paying white collar jobs in an office building. I'm talking about average, everyday blue-collar workers. Many of them have tattoos and / or piercings, which cause absolutely no problems with job performance. Refusing to hire someone based solely on whether or not they have tattoos / piercings in this day and age is nothing short of discrimination, as it has absolutely nothing to do with a person's ability to perform their job duties. Keep refusing to hire people solely on that basis, and you very well may be facing a discrimination lawsuit before long.

I have an earring in my left ear, and have had it since age 8, and I am considering getting tattoos once I have money for it

I agree. While piercings and tattoos may seem offensive to some, it IMO does not warrant not hiring someone, especially if they show good skill and personality. The main reason many company will turn down a person with a large number of percings or visible tattoos, is because of the stigma associated with it and the fact, that in many cases, it also looks unhygenic. Especially jobs with customer contact are pretty bitchy with this (uniform and strict codes regarding haircut, beards etc.). But the main reason is to get someone who looks as normal as possible, so as to not offend potential customers.
Actually the most lax place i've personally seen regarding dresscodes are smaller, non-chain music and movie stores as well as Gamestop (I have yet to see an un-pierced or non-tattoed clerk there)
Many of the cases can actually be regarded as "inverse" gender discrimination: if you're a male with long hair and ear piercings (like me) looking for an office job, you'll most likely be asked to cut your hair and remove that earring; yet women are given these privileges as it's a social norm. That alone is discrimination, yet it's overlooked, as it's socially acceptable that men always have short hair and no piercings. This is, however, something that is starting to wash away, as people are taking much more freedom regarding their looks.
Regarding what I think of them, I have no problems with tats or piercings, as long as it's not overdone.
i love piercings and tattoos on people. i don't have any right now. my single piercing (on my hand) migrated out and was infected about half the time anyways.
i would like to get a tattoo but there isn't any single interest that lingers long enough that it should result in a permanent modification of my body. i think someday i may get a visual representation of my daughter's name, but she thinks it is a silly idea lol (even though she has already saved up for her first tattoo).
i like to watch people get tattooed as seeing the artists at work is a beautiful thing to me. i have gone to one tattoo & piercing convention to check out the art and such.
EDIT: took out one "lol". srsly, too much loling
