What kind of an answer were you expecting, "yes your cat has autism"? Nobody knows. Are you worried about your cat? My cat is really social but so is the family and so am I. I think cats and dogs take after their owners.

I have no cat, but I was just kinda wondering how can you tell if a cat has it.

No serious answer so far though.

Ok, vets are concerned with how cat's think in as far as it relates to their physical health. People have been curious how they think but nobody has ever been concerned about a cat having aspergers or autism so, no one has ever figured out a test for cats. Does that help?

Could get someone to put it in a PET-CT, scan it with a isotope.

Also really for a cat to have autism, first you need to get another cat to agree what the norm is first. But since they don't care, not going to get one to confess in the interrogation room. Even if you waterboard it & play techno music, while flicking the light on & off. :joker:

( Talking about the film, Roadtrip: Beerpong techno ninja scene, by the way. )

This thread is making me think of the syllogism:

All cats are dogs.
Fido is a cat.
Therefore Fido is a dog.

! !!

Every cat I have ever known has been smarter than most people. A few of them have been smarter than almost everyone.

But I don't think you can say that cats are autistic, since what you describe is, for them, neurotypical. They are a different species. I will say that I think cats are neurologically more similar to me (I can understand them better) than NTs. So their minds may work much like ours - but the important thing is that the way their minds work is their default.

I think that is a good interpretation.

I think cats' minds work more like mine, too.

The only dogs I like are very similar to cats. Those that do not follow every command. Quiet dogs.

That's a bit like saying "blindness is a human condition". Autism is caused by poor neural connectivity between the frontal lobe and the rest of the brain, and neural overconnectivity within the frontal lobe. Since all mammalian brains have a frontal lobe and an overall very similar structure, autism can theoretically occur in all mammals. And there are indeed non-human mammals that show autistic symptoms and an autistic neurological development:

Quote:
UCLA researchers studied mice lacking CNTNAP2 and found that the animals demonstrated many features of human autism, including abnormal vocal communication, irregular social interaction and repetitive behaviors. The animals were hyperactive and suffered epileptic seizures like patients with CDFE.
...
The animals also possessed fewer nerve cells that connect the neurons that carry impulses into the central nervous system with those that transmit impulses out to the rest of the body. This finding dovetails with Geschwind's earlier research, which found that children carrying the CNTNAP2 variant possess a disjointed brain. Their frontal lobe is over-connected to itself and poorly connected to the rest of the brain. Communication with the back of the brain was particularly diminished.
...
"Our findings suggest that evolution has maintained the repetitive behaviors related to autism across species," Geschwind said. "If the same is true of social behaviors, we will use the mouse model to study potential therapies that may one day help people with autism."

Source: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 ... 122749.htm

Of course the fact that non-human animals can suffer from autism doesn't mean that all cats are autistic. Their social modus operandi is quite normal for their species. But a few individual cats that are unusually hyperactive and clumsy might be feline aspies :)

What you have said and quoted here does NOT constitute proof that cats can have ASD. There is no scientific evidence that demonstrates ASD in cats. PERIOD.

The general public is going to misunderstand all of us in a very negative way if they hear this nonsense relating our disorder to cat behaviors. Don't you see? It isn't cute or funny to have ASD. I love animals and delight in trying to understand their behaviors but this topic sends a dangerously false idea.

That your cat has behaviors that REMIND you of autistic traits does not mean that your cat is autistic.

You cannot because there is no scientific evidence that cats can have autism.

Well I guess an Autistic cat would act like a neurotypical human so a neurotypical cat will act like an autistic human. :D Ill take a neurotypical cat and breed a bunch of autistic cats to give to the neurotypical people so we all can be happy. :D

One of my cats does act like a neurotypical human.

All he wants to do is be in physical contact with another human or cat, 24 hours a day, and he more or less is, due to his wilfullness. He does everything possible to get his way. If no one is paying attention to him, he'll start destroying things while looking at you to judge your annoyance and whether he needs to escalate or not. He never destroys anything when he's home by himself (no point). If he can't get to sit on a human, he'll go and sit on top of the other male cat (the female cat won't let him near). The other cat used to resist, but has been bullied into submission, and just allows himself to be squished now.

He has no respect for privacy. No space is safe. If you're going to the bathroom, he wants to come in and lick your legs while you're sitting on the john. Curiously enough, he doesn't do this when you're just wearing shorts. Only in the bathroom. Actually there is one refuge from him, you're safe in the shower. But if you're taking a bath, he has to drink the water.

He also humps everything in sight. Every pillow, stuffed animal, blanket, or other similar object in the house has been violated. And yes, he's fixed.

If either of the other cats is getting attention, he comes running. Every time. He can be summoned by calling the name of either of the other two cats. He's the only one that shows up, actually. If he's doing something bad, we often trick him this way so we don't have to get up and stop him.

He is obsessed with dominating every living in the creature in the house, including and especially guests. He has to eat first before the other cats, he has to be supervised while he's eating so he doesn't bully his way into stealing their food, and it's the same with catnip. Actually he has to be supervised all the time, when anyone is home. He makes sure of it.

He has absolutely no interest at all in chasing things or playing with strings or sitting in sunny spots or any of the things the other cats enjoy doing.

Needless to say, it isn't possible for humans to have intimate relations when he's awake. He gets up on the bed and caterwauls, or attempts to lick feet. It's not possible to keep any doors closed either.
