And the "music" being churned out these days, along with the unoriginality of new movies coming out? I guess people miss the 90's because it actually had a tangible originality.

Ridiculous yes, probably because it's a media rumor.
It's been shown in studies that as we age we're less receptive to new music. There is always original music being made you just have to know where to look for it. As Kurgan pointed out, a lot of the good stuff from the 90's was not top 40, stands to reason top 40 now is not the best this decade will have to offer.
Do you want us to get off your lawn now? us whippersnappers I mean?

In 15 years time, when we look back at the present, do you think we'll remeber Jersey Shore, Justin Bieber, sidecut hair, koifish tattos, micropenis SUVs like the Escalade/H2, the intense focus on political correctness, silly internet memes and the economic recession—or do you think we'll remember The Expendables, the Bugatti Veyron, Within Temptation, the rise of iOS, the Nintendo Wii, the Uncharted games, the increased focus on bodyfitness, China's focus on a mixed economy, and the fall of Gadaffi?

Look other places than the charts. Where Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna are today, Aqua, Aaron Carter, Toy-box and Spice Girls were yesterday. :P

Edit:

This was extremely popular inthe 1990's:

I think I'll remember Mad Men, GoT, & Community/parks&rec/30 rock
I think I'll remember Bridesmaids, Inception, and Forgetting Sarah Marshal
Louie C.K. being on top of the comedy world
the iphone
our first black potus
Florence & the Machine, Adele, & Azealia Banks

What's 'good' is very individual

I'm aware of that, but what you're mentioning aren't reality shows, commercial music made just to sell or generic stuff. When people will think back to the carefree 2010's they'll focus on the innovative aspects.

2012 is very different from the 90s.

Our money is weaker, the media is stronger, and the population is higher. All of these things are dangerous.

I was born in 1966 so here goes:

Me too, I loved the 1980's, it was a good time to be a teen/young adult. I also miss the 1970's, it was a good time being a kid.

Baa baa sheep should be black damn it ! ! Music videos should be allowed to contain a countries flag, I should be able to call someone from France French, and someone from Pakistan Pakistani. Without some do gooder looming in the shadows.

So I think I would of missed the freedom of the 90's if I wasn't a kid

Onto something I know about, there's the cartoons. The stuff that gets force fed into preschoolers nowadays is a joke, I remember when preschool TV was actually educational, instead of the "Jip Jip Joo Joo Bop can't find his bingle bangle, so he can't shingle shangle the dallywhacker". (no wonder pre-school kids are dumb and teenage pregnancy is forever on the rise)

And what happened to the violent cartoons/programs that were not only fun to watch but taught kids how s***e it was out in the real world, how you had to work for stuff you wanted. Instead you get the live action rubbish that basically tells kids to get as much money as you can off your parents and if you're not up to date with fashion, other kids will crucify you.

As for the music I reckon artists of today wouldn't of last 10 minutes in a time where there was a diverse range of music in the charts rather then just auto tuned tripe.

That's what I liked about the 1970's and 1980's as well. I don't think shows like "All in the Family," Chico and the Man," "Airwolf," and so on would make it on today's TV. I also remember watching "Jonny Quest" where you actually see Race Bannon sock a bad guy or "Speed Racer" where people actually died.

One cartoon from the 1990's that I love is "The Tick."

The 90's took place while I was in primary school and junior high school. Taping the top 50 charts on the VCR (lol a VCR? wut r dey?) every saturday morning was a sacred ritual. As a result I know a truckload of songs from the mid 90's to the '00's.

But what's popular on the charts today I have no idea.

But seriously, I call BS. A lot of things have changed.

Ah, the old "music sure is s**t these days" argument. I always miss it whenever I don't encounter it. I don't understand why it's such a big deal because you can enjoy more music now than you could have ever dreamed of before back when the apparent "good stuff" was being made. Including the good stuff.
In ten years people will say that they miss the 2000s because it had better music than the music of 2018 or 2019 or whatever random-ass year people will say that in. Around that time period people will begin missing the 2000s. It's always that way.

If anyone ever says this we might as well all top ourselves as society will truly be a lost cause.

Wow that's weird! I am really not that much older than you, I was born in January 1990, so technically we were born in the same decade, but I can remember most of the 90s whereas you probably at best have one memory of 1999. Does watching videos from the 90s feel surreal/like another world to you? Cuz I remember, it really wasn't that different. :D

You must all know 2004 was the best year, the real golden year.

2012:
Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, One Direction, Adele, Black Veil Brides.

1992:
Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pantera, Rage Against the Machine.

Do the math, 2012 is sh*t.
