Ass is not bad at all. Why, calling someone an ass might be considered a compliment if you identify with the positive traits of this handsome fellow:
I find it interesting how some words are swear words or not, depending on which side of the Pond you're on. In an American show or game, they once had a British character (portrayed by an American actor) use the phrase 'kick some fanny'- and you won't like to see people being kicked in the fanny on British television.
I also remember some ten years ago, there was some hubbub on morning television because children's program presenter Reggie Yates said 'bloody' during a live broadcast; he had to apologise immediately after.
