So what if the wood and fish is contaminated? It is most likely wood will be contaminated by fallout from the explosions. By burning wood you will only be putting radiation back into the air. The fish and the water would probably be contaminated unless filtered out and safe to drink.

Then I'd be contaminated as well and it wouldn't matter.

Rather Well, I consider myself an expert at nuclear war and fallout patterns. I have a secondary post far away from any primary targets. I have geiger counters, radiation suits and enough food and water to last for 2 weeks.

Why would you need money to buy stuff to make your empire?

It's a post-apocalyptic world, by then survival would be more important than money.

You could just steal the stuff you need.

Sorry, I had to but in. :(

Combat skills would likely be helpful too. How else do you stop people from stealing your fish, fuel, or whatever?

I'd go find all my military buddies. Then we'd set out, getting what we needed, helping those in trouble, (we'd be in army vehicles) doing what we could to restore order to local areas, creating small governments, then moving on to help more people. By the time we'd we done, it would be more then a year and we'd have successfully saved humanity. At which point, the large following we would have gathered, including arms, vehicles and whatnot would then find me in a large castle somewhere in the Caribbean, taking over the world and bringing about one rule by one person, with officals in each city to oversee what needs to be done. Give or take 4 or so years I'd have a stable world again.

I'd be driven to despair as soon as the internet died

I'd probably end up as a science project for the government, who are trying to determine what causes people to end up as zombies.

Needless to say, it won't go as smoothly as planned, heh heh heh.

This is actually something I think about a lot. And when I bring it up in conversation (well sometimes I think about a post apocalyptic world. So lets carpool) people just look at me like I am nuts... But anyway I have come to the conclusion it would be survivial of the fittest. Brawn plus brains plus skills. Children's librarians aren't going to be in high demand. I suspect I would probably die due to not breathing due to no medications and if that didn't do it I doubt I could avoid being killed by somebody because with my medical conditions in all their glory I am useless and pretty helpless.

I think those will do the best are going to be the strong and ruthless who are also charismatic. Throw in skills with that and you are going to do even better. Think surgeons who used to be in the special ops or whatever. And force is always going to win over other things until there is time for healthier patterns to emerge.

If a nuclear war is declared, I'm heading for the centre of the nearest likely target. This country is so small that a nuclear strike would affect most of it sooner or later, and I'd rather die quickly than slowly, thanks very much.

I'd probably get very, very drunk, too, because I'm a coward.

I might stick some crumpets or marshmellows on myself so I could do something useful whilst burning up :D

As long as I have an assualt rifle and lots of ammunition I'll be OK. Preferably an M16 series M4A1 RIS but an AK47/74 would be more reliable.

ditto, except for the breeding rights! ROTF....

My husband and I must have been warriors in a previous life. We've already discussed how we would create barracades with our furniture and weapons from my chemistry lab in the basement. I'd be able to supply the n'hood with soap to stay clean.

Survival depends on one thing. Location. As to the blast zone due to radiation and contamination of supplies (food/water).

I think that in the slight (but growing) chance that a nuclear war happens, it may not be like what most people imagine, and may be quite survivable with only moderate precautions, such as having a supply of Potassium Iodide on hand.

There are way fewer nuclear warheads in inventory now, each one has a smaller "yield" (explosive power) than in the past, and they are capable of being delivered much more accurately, as well.
Also, countermeasures may be able to somewhat reduce how many "get through".
All of this means that the effect of even an "all-out" war may not be the civilization-ending thing that we've all come to imagine.

I understand the attitude that one should just expect to want to give up if it happens. I recall in the early 1980s watching the made for TV movie "The Day After", about a global thermonuclear war.
I saw it with my Dad, and his comment after the movie was something to the effect that it would be best to just
get vaporized when it happened, given the potentially dreadful possibilities of being a survivor.
