Since I seldom get to travel, I'd like to have the opportunity to get out and experience different places before I decide on a place to relocate to. I simply cannot stand Texas. The weather sucks. The politics suck.

My criteria for a new place to live would be:

1. Legalized same-sex marriages, as well as other legal possibilities for LGBT citizens. Texas is a state controlled by far-right douchebags who attempt everything in their power to f**k over gay people. Seriously, DO NOT live here if you are gay. Homophobia is practically a past time in this god-awful state.

2. Seasonal weather. Texas summers are hot as hell, and it has these quasi-winters that don't actually feel like winter except for cold fronts.

3. Public transportation. I live in a city that has over 300,000 residents but no public transportation.

4. Urban area, with a fun, active nightlife.

That's about all I can think of.

The place where you live sounds awful. Get out of such a place ASAP and have a better life somewhere else. I don't think there are many countries that have legalized same-sex marriage yet. Somewhere in Europe, maybe? Even if same-sex marriage is not yet legalized, I think there are many progressive cities where people are not bigoted. But I think all your other criteria are met quite easily in many big cities. Also if you start driving a car, you probably don't need public transport.

There are several states in my own home country that allow same-sex marriages. The problem is that, currently, federal law does not recognize same-sex marriages, so I may be legally married in one state, but the federal government will still withhold marital benefits from me and my spouse just because we're a same-sex married couple. Hopefully that BS will be stopped by the Supreme Court later this year...

I don't follow politics very well, whether local or international, but Obama has expressed his support for same-sex marriage, hasn't he? I think I read something like that last year. Will that have some strong impact on the federal-level legalization of same-sex marriage? Well, I hope it will happen later this year as you said though I'm not USian.

Yeah he did but the rumor I heard is that the supreme court will announce their decision in June. Even if it's federally recognized, some states like Texas may still not accept it, kind of like how some states are trying to stop abortions even thou Roe vs Wade made them federally legal.
I know Louisiana isn't the same as Texas, Descartes but its pretty conservative too & both my exes are from Texas so I know a bit about it. I think you would be better in a lot more liberal place like Vermont. Same-sex marriages aren't legal here yet but I don't think many here would be upset when the supreme court makes em legal. We could hang out some if you move to the Burlington area

States have been attempting to circumvent federal law for centuries. It all boils down to that ancient "states' rights" mantra. I'm inclined to believe that states should not have the power to discriminate against their own citizens...

Nick, you live in Vermont now? I've never been, although I wouldn't mind going there. I'm not sure I'd want to live there, though, because it's so rural. New England sounds like a nice place to relocate to.

Considering moving down to Colchester. Sounds like a place where I can actually be happy for once. Lucky I have a good friend there with a house and who is willing to rent a room out to me.

Yeah & same here.

Yep I posted about it alittle on the link in my post sig. haven't seen alot of it but it' varies thou in general it's rural. Burlington is alot less rural than Schriever, Louisiana but Schriever is like 12miles away from the city of Houma & that's a city of alot of businesses, lot of heavy traffic, & very limited public transportation or sidewalks.

So, I decided to stay in California until I get my Associates Degree, which would be in 2 years.

I want to leave out of state because CA is too expensive. If you own/ going to own guns, you won't like it here. I also want to meet new faces and places.

I heard Austin is pretty progressive. But it is still subject to Texas Weather Beatdown

I've been to Austin twice. It is a very liberal city (in contrast to the rest of the state), and it is also pretty humid down there.

Oh, absolutely, it was. Viretta Park (that's the park beside Kurt's old house, that's where all the fans go to pay homage) is...well, if you're a Nirvana fan who's been there, I don't need to explain it to you, and if you haven't, I can't really put it into words.

'Course, I now suffer a sort of double whammy at this time of year...one, I'm kind of sad for the, um, obvious reason, and two, having first been to Seattle in April, I miss the place like nobody's business. (Wistful sigh for which there doesn't seem to be an emoticon.)

Considered it. I decided I could never leave - my family have been here hundreds of years - our heart beats through the hills. And I couldn't live down south, its overcrowded, rude and expensive, full of selfish Tories, and the landscapes are vastly inferior. They might have the money but we have the Dales, Peak, Pennines and Lakes. You can't put a price on that.

I've heavily considered moving from the UK to the USA, I want to go to an English speaking country but Australia is out because I have a huge fear of tarantulas! I want to live in a warmer place and I've always loved America whenever I've been there. I'm not too fussed about work really, I should have nice options with a maths degree (BSc.)

We have tarantulas in Texas, too.

I almost stopped to pick one up off the road one day and take with me to my oldest brother's house. When I got there, I wished that I had gotten it since one of my nephew's junior high aged kids were there. They would have enjoyed having it as a pet.

Eh, I keep thinking about it, but finding some place with the right mix of laws and weather has always been the challenge. Most of the Northeast is out for me, so I keep thinking about Nevada, Arizona, Texas, or Georgia, but it'll probably be a while even if I do decide to leave Seattle.

Just done a quick Google, they seem to be in the south that share a border with Mexico so California, Arizona and Texas have them, so all of those states are out! Although according to Google they don't live in LA, just in the mountains by them.

My friend owns a tarantula and he finds it funny to take pictures of it and put them on my wall on FB. There was an article on BBC News at the time about making tarantula kebabs so I sent the link to him saying "can I do that with your tarantula?" He wasn't too impressed :P

I would not consider shooting a tarantula to be too much of an overreaction. .22 Snake shot ought to do it...

I'm an American living in Australia. Been here for 1.5 years now. Tarantulas are not the worry, its the brown snakes and the funnel spiders. Both will kill you in a matter of min. I jut got home about 15 min ago and noticed I had a Redback web blocking my front door with 2 Redbacks on it. 8O

Wikipedia - Redback

I snuck past it and got a can of cooking spary and a lighter.
