In terms of myself, I can only tolerate nicknames depending on the context. Unless the origin is offensive, I usually don't mind nicknames. I'm also one to shorten some of my friends' names when I talk to them. Sometimes they stick with others, sometimes they don't. Either way, nicknames aren't bad when warranted :P

My classmates called me "Mildew" or "Leper" because I had severe skin allergies all through primary school.

My dad referred to me as "Crud-Bud" (or was it "Crud-Butt"?) during this time, too.

It was only after I got myself tested by an allergist that I was able to control and eventually eliminate the skin rashes, so no more nick-names for me!
