Yeah, we had some pretty heavy flooding this January/February as well (low after low coming in from the Atlantic). A few thousand soldiers had to be called in to help with the relief effort (though thankfully, a good couple of hundred miles from where I live!). The lows also brought strong winds (up to 108m/h or 173 km/h) so plenty of trees were knocked over. That, falling branches and the flooding meant that it was not a good winter for forests.

Speaking of flooding, the first year my husband and I moved to our current location, we had horrible flooding, a rough winter with many icy days, two tornados and an earthquake.
He looks at me and goes, by god woman, if we have a plague of locusts next, I'll never forgive you.

(I specify horrible flooding, because we live by a river and it floods almost every spring, unless we're in drought.)

I'm not a big outdoorsy type, but we do live almost a mile away from the Talladega National Forest. There's woods all over the place where I live though. I'm in the country.

I live a few minutes from a vast woodland area. Ive been meaning to go exploring but im "saving it" since I want my first foray to be a memory i'll savour for decades. I love forests and woodland particularly in summer where it feels as if ive been transported to a fantasy landscape. I can shed all the layers of culture and civilisation and become something primitive and wild.At the same time ther's the "higher appreciation" for the beauty of the thing.

I got lost once and I walked through the most beautiful forest I had ever seen.

The sun was shining through the trees and it was November so all the leaves lit up bright orange.

That was one of the best days in my life that I remember.

I should get lost more often.
