There is nothing at all wrong with having a Southern accent. People who assume we are stupid because of them are ignorant bigots and I inform them of that directly. I got a lot of flack for my accent when we lived in DC, and I told quite a few people off for assuming things. I hate it when people make assumptions about someone based on how they speak. I don't assume everyone with a Boston accent is a stuck up as*hole or that everyone who has a Chicago accent is a douchebag who insults everyone or that everybody with a California accent is a New Age airhead or that everyone with a Canadian accent is a spineless socialist. Those are simply stereotypes of people from those places and while it can be true that there are some people from there who are like that, there are many people from different places who are like that too. Most of the people I've met from those places are nothing like the stereotypes, and I don't stereotype people based on where they are from. I judge them based on their actions and what they say, not how they pronounce it. How you are doesn't depend on where you are from. I know plenty of uneducated racists but I know plenty from other places who are uneducated racists as well. We don't have a monopoly on it down South.
What I hate about Southern accents is the fake ones on TV and in the movies. I feel that if an actor or actress can't go to the trouble to do a little research and find out that there are different kinds of Southern accents then I don't feel like taking the time to watch them work.
That is interesting, because I always thought Washington, D.C. was considered for the most part more of a Southern city than Northern one. I grew up across the river in Virginia, and I was made fun of for my Southern accent when I was up in New York state and Ohio areas. Everyone thought I sounded like Forrest Gump.
