hmm, defining gothic as a style is a difficult thing to do. for one, the "original" movement that stemmed from new wave diversified into a lot of branches (or branchlets - or points on a fluid spectrum, actually), and then, a lot of other movements are usually listed under goth as well. metalheads with a primary focus on gothic metal could even be called gothics and still like death metal, although death metal doesnt have too many points of connection with gothic.
the middle ages scene, industrial, neofolk, martial music/military pop, a part of the fetish scene... they all dont really have a common source with "classic" new-wave rooted gothic, yet they usually are seen as belonging to the gothic scene.
it doesnt help either that there are divisions into primarily musical branches and primarily stylistical branches that dont necessarily need to have connections. its all very diverse... and while there are discussions all the time what is true and what is not, no one needs to really care.
i, for example, like to listen to death metal every once in a while (but prefer power electronics for destressing), inflicting pain doesnt do anything for me (i wouldnt want to hurt people that i care for, and i dont mind other people enough to want to hurt them), i dont dress in black exclusively and i left cutting behind and am interested in bladed stuff more from a technical/aesthetical point of view -it became more of an aspie thing, actually- but i guess i somehow fit the goth label (at least i go to goth clubs).
