Those colors would be fun on a playground, but in a kitchen they're just too much. That design hurts my eyes.

maybe not, but i can see how it may have happened.
with the escalator one, the escalator must have been installed first, and then the next floor up was built without reference to the escalators somehow.
it must have been rectified before opening to the public obviously.

the picture of the stupid staircase is more believable because it looks like it was built by arabs.
so i propose the first stair set was built but the plans neglected to include that it must be offset to the wall by about 1 meter (36").
the second flight was build hard against the wall, and even though the builders would have seen that it would not have worked, they just did their job because they wanted to be paid, and then they moved on.
