I musta misunderstood the word "Overtakes". I thought overtaking the 2nd place runner meant he passed him/her which means the runner this thread is about would of came in 1st. The post had unnecessary information which was designed to confuse/fool/trick us.

He overtook or passed the second place person, meaning he came in second.
He didn't overtake or pass the first place person.
Oh OK, I misread it  I blame my dyslexia

No. You did NOT misread it.

It says "he overtook the person in second place". And you read it correctly.

And like everyone else, including me, you impulsively figured "he is now ahead of the second place person so that means he is now in first place".

You don't go the extra step that I and others went of realizing that if you "over take the person in SECOND place" you are still behind the person who was in first place. Which would mean that you would then yourself be in ...second place (ahead of the person who had been in second place and behind the person who was, and still is, in first place).

It reminds me of an Olympic running race I watched on TV. The announcer said of the second place person, "If they can just pass _______ , they'll win the race!"

Duh. 8) :P

Yeah, the first set was my reasoning when I answered the poll.
Mountain Goat's solution confused me at first, and I was at fist annoyed that he didn't explain it, but the I figured it out on my own.

Mountain Goat, please post more, these are fun exercises :D

Yeah, the extra info confused me so much at first I had NO idea where he was, I almost just hit an arbitrary number on the poll, but then I re read it once more and wrongly thought he came in second.

It had always confused me why unnecessary info is seen as necessary in these tasks. I remember teachers warning us that there might be trick questions on exams or tests, and it always pissed me off. Like why are they trying to trick us? It should be enough that we can this stuff. I don't care for that.

That makes complete sense. Thanx naturalplastic :D

I'll have to read MG's other post but it may be a few days cuz I may not have much time to check the forum. I'm mostly going through email & checking watched posts at the moment.

Who was the person who put the right answer in AFTER the right answer has been revealed? Hahahaha! (Ok. Maybe the person didn't look and see the answer).
